ISLAMABAD:

Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid on Wednesday said the country’s media was free because of the sacrifices made by its armed forces.

“Today, on Youm-e-Shuhada, we commemorate our martyrs who sacrificed their lives in defence of the country. Every institution [in the country] is independent today due to their sacrifices,” he said while addressing the media at the closing ceremony of NBP blind cricket T-20 trophy 2014.

“These sacrifices of the armed forces have ensured the protection of democracy, judiciary and journalism,” he added.

Admitting that civil-military ties had experienced a bad patch recently, Rashid said “There is no difference among state institutions when it comes to the sacrifices of the Pakistan Army.”

“The soldiers of the Pakistan Army and personnel of the intelligence agencies have been sacrificing their lives in fight against terrorism… the nation salutes them,” he said.

The minister added that the ‘matchless sacrifices’ of the country’s armed forces and intelligence agencies were the reason terrorists, “who want to snatch our freedom,” have been unable to succeed in their “nefarious designs”.
