BJP leader Narendra Modi has said that ‘Bangladeshis’ will be deported if he comes to power, in his sharpest comments yet on illegal immigrants. They have been given the red carpet welcome by politicians just for votes, he said at a rally on Sunday, NDTV has reported.
“You can write it down. After May 16, these Bangladeshis better be prepared with their bags packed,” Modi said in Serampore in West Bengal, which shares a porous border with Bangladesh.
Targeting the state’s Trinamool Congress government, Modi said, “You are spreading the red carpet for vote bank politics. If people come from Bihar, they are outsiders to you. If people come from Odisha, they are outsiders to you. But if some Bangladeshi comes, your face seems to shine. This country cannot run like this. We won’t allow you to destroy the country for the sake of your vote bank politics.”
In February, Modi’s comments appearing to draw a distinction between Hindu and Muslim migrants had triggered a row.
“We have a responsibility toward Hindus who are harassed and suffer in other countries. Where will they go? India is the only place for them. Our government cannot continue to harass them. We will have to accommodate them here,” he said. His party’s manifesto also controversially mentions that India is a natural home for persecuted Hindus.
Some reports suggest that there are about 20 million Bangladeshi immigrants in India at present, but there are no reliable figures. Many of them have reportedly been able to snag voting IDs, ration cards and other documents for legitimacy, allegedly in return for votes.
Deporting illegal Bangladeshi immigrants has always been a part of the BJP’s agenda, but Modi’s sharp comments indicate it could move beyond rhetoric.
Recently, BJP president Rajnath Singh said if the BJP came to power, it would investigate “how so many people of a particular community could enter the country illegally and settle down.”

I agree with Indians here, news title is misleading
Will a country allow foreign nationals to stay illegally on its territory ? No Should it allow them to stay indefinitely ? Well, this depends on the country's government policy.
Hate is NOT involved in this issue at all. This issue has to be dealt with in an objective manner. Throwing the foreign nationals out of the country is not hatred just because a large majority of them happen to be muslims !
So stop playing the game of rhetoric & semantics.
Minimum things to be done are 1. These Foreign nationals must get the Passports of their origin country. 2. Issued Special Residency Documents(to be renewed every year) for their Families & 3. children (if born on the Indian soil) 4. Other Legal matters pertaining to Annulment of Ration Cards, Voting Rights, Purchase of Property, Jobs etc 5. Regular Reporting to UN level Bodies especially for refugee categories etc
Remember that the foreign nationals have to abide by the laws of Resident Country & they cannot expect any special entitlements of any kind.
ET reporters, I can understand your frustration.
How is it hate speech? Media is ready to sensationalise anything Modi says.Pathethic.
Whats so hateful about evicting illegal Bangladeshis from India. Doesn't Saudi Arabia periodically illegal Pakistanis from its soil? Woudl you call that hate mongering. You guys have gone blind with your fear and hatred of Modi.
what a hate filled title by pakis. India is for Indians, not for illegal immigrants who rejected India. Full support. do it as soon as possible. @Gp65: here he clearly mentioned all illegal immigrants, other than refugees
Why is the idea of deporting illegal Bangladeshis considered to be hate mongering? All Indians be they Hindu, Muslim, christian, Sikh, Parsis, Jains or atheists have equal rights in India but not illegal immigrants.
Pakistan is already in the process of identifying and sending back Afghan refugees in batches,
