In both cases, the BJP’s response has been half-hearted at best. A tweet from a senior BJP leader called Singh’s statements ‘irresponsible’; Modi used the same adjective for Togadia in a separate tweet without referring to him directly. If Modi wants to allay the fears of minorities, especially Muslims, he would have to do better than that. And therein, perhaps, lies the problem: Modi has made absolutely no effort to distance himself from his communal past. He has compared the thousand Muslims killed in the 2002 Gujarat riots to a puppy being run over by car; he has refused to apologise for the carnage that took place under his watch as chief minister.
Since its independence, India has prided itself on the secular character of its people and constitution, despite numerous nationalist movements, communal riots and ethnic tensions. But now, with candidates and right-wing Hindu leaders talking of forcible evictions and no room for dissidence, this secular character is increasingly giving way to fascism. India’s moniker of ‘the world’s largest democracy’ will mean little if its Hindu majority targets its Muslim minority, which, worryingly, looks likely to take place under state sanction. Never have India’s secular credentials come under so much threat as they are now.

Indias hindu majority have never and shall not in the future also target any of its minority, be it muslims or anyone else. However, the majority shall not also sit by idle and let it be targeted by all others as in the past. Everyone, minority or majority, shall have equal and equitable rights and obligations. No right without corresponding obligation.
Democracy = Population, in Pakistan Punjabi rules due to population, in India Hindu rules due to population, as simple as that jigar
@Rahim J:
Lol! Do you even understand what is meant by worlds largest democracy?? It just means a country where the maximum number of people participate in a electoral process. If China was a democracy it would have been the worlds largest democracy.
Largest=Population Democracy=Elections
There... was that so difficult??
@Rahim J: is that a licence to kill and wipe out every minorities? stop teaching others
Its comical to see paki media focussing their whole attention on Indian polls when nobody even the right wing fanatics in India bothered about elections in pakistan.
@ sid...and since when have we claimed to be the largest democracy anyways...
That VHP leader is responsible for the mess Modi currently is in. They parted their ways after Godhra riot and Modi expelled all his supporters from power. There hasn't been a single riot in Gujarat after that. Pakistani newspapers give clean chit to so called secular parties. There have been so many communal riots in non BJP ruled states since 2002. Do not forget the fact that relation between Indian and Pakistan was at its best during BJP ruled period. India is looking for a decisive leader like Indira Gandhi in Modi. There is absolutely nothing communal about people's desire. Indians are basically secular because majority Hindus believe that there are different paths to reach god. They accept divergent view points, but a minority of Hindus are against the idea of secularism. According to them India shouldn't care about non dharmic or non native religions. There is a small chance that BJP might not come to power this time, but by next election there is a high probability that Congress party will cease to exist. BJP rule is inevitable.
It is real fun to see Pakistanis commenting on Indian secularism when it's own record of minority treatment is worst in world.
Organisations have millions of members. Their statements cannot be taken as representing values of the organisation if they are not part of organisation's policy.
Coming to Togadia, it is a known fact that he actually campaigned against Modi in the last election.
Secondly, protection to minorities is in the constitution which gives equal rights to minorities - as distint from Pakistan constitution which does not.
Apart from the constitution - the executive, opposition, media are all vocal in India. MEdia made a big deal about the speech and election commission has sought evidence of the speech. It has been even handedly ruling against people found to indulge in hate mongering. IF the allegations are true, prompt action will be taken.
This is quite distinct from the fact that no political parties in Pakistan have spoken about the 1000 plus forcible conversions of young girls that take place each year. When 18th amendment was passed with consensus, no one suggested that the 2nd amendment which criminalises worship of Ahmadis should be removed; no one suggested that all Pakistani citizens should have an equal right to become COAS, CJ, PResident or Prime Minister.
Please worry about the injustices in your country. Indian civil society, media, opposittion and even BJP supporters will not keep quiet if Indian government takes policy decisions which are discrimnatory. There is no evidence that interfaith discrimination was practiced in Gujarat where Modi ruled for 12 years and I have little reason to believe he will do so if he becomes the PM.
