ISLAMABAD:
Agricultural policy should be aimed at the welfare of small farmers and combating poverty in rural areas, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said chairing a meeting at the finance ministry on Saturday. “Tackling poverty demanded fundamental rethinking and innovation,” he told the meeting held to review the prices of agricultural products and agriculture sector growth. He said agriculture continues to account for over 21% of GDP, while employing 45% of the country’s labour force, according to a press release. Dar emphasised that National Agriculture Policy must be formulated at the earliest for optimum use of natural resources to make the country self-sufficient in food. Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research, Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan said the ministry was working on a number of projects to make modern agricultural technology accessible to farmers and growers so that they could increase the yield of their farms.
