ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday said there was no option except to give a sharp boost to economic growth on a sustained basis.

For this purpose, he said, innovative ideas were needed in communications and infrastructure development which will open up Pakistan to Central Asia, China and other countries in the region, on the one hand, and Turkey and Middle East, on the other.

He said this during a meeting with members of the Task Force on Private Sector Development at Aiwan-e-Sadr.

“We need to focus on infrastructure development by encouraging the private entrepreneur to participate actively in such projects, for which finances could be raised though stock exchanges.”

Zardari said the government was keen to upgrade railway lines between Pakistan and Turkey for the speedy movement of cargo, keeping in view its immense potential and future prospects.

He said he has been pursuing with the Turkish leadership the upgrading of the railway line, adding for this purpose finances could be raised through stock exchanges of Pakistan, Turkey and Japan.

Continuity of economic policies was necessary and for that a great deal of responsibility lay on the business community, he added.
