DG KHAN: As many as 15 people were killed in Kot Chutta area of DG Khan when a bus ran them over at a platform, Express News reported. Soon after, protesters set the bus alight and beat up the driver.

According to Express News correspondent Shahadat Hussain, the brakes of an intercity coach travelling from Peshawar to Karachi failed near Kot Chutta, and it ploughed into waiting passengers at a platform. The accident left at least 15 dead and many others injured.

The driver attempted to escape with the bus, but was quickly found itself surrounded by an angry mob that chased the bus, intercepting and stopping it a half kilometer away.

The mob thrashed the driver and set the bus on fire.

Later, when the driver was handed over to the police, he said that the brakes of his bus had failed and that he could not control the vehicle as it crashed into the platform.

The injured and the dead were shifted to a nearby hospital.

Eyewitnesses added that the police and rescue officials took an hour to reach the site of the incident.

We are now possibly seeing more deaths from accidents than terrorism. Is this time for media and public responsibility to put pressure on federal, provincial and city lawmakers to not only all roadway and vehicle safety laws but also much stronger implementation. A unbiased oversight committee is needed.
