Pakistan Steel Mills’ employees need salaries

Letter April 13, 2014
The steel mill management announced last month that it had paid the workers’ salaries when, in actuality, it hadn’t.

KARACHI: Dear Prime Minister of Pakistan, I want to draw your attention towards the Pakistan Steel Mills’ (PSM), which is the largest steel manufacturing plant in Pakistan. It is continually in a state of crisis for the past many years. Now, there is hardly any money in the mills’ account and due to financial constraints, the PSM isn’t able to pay salaries to its employees. Workers have not received their salaries for the last three months yet. The steel mill management announced last month that it had paid the workers’ salaries when, in actuality, it hadn’t.

Without money, the common man’s survival is not possible at a time when prices of all necessities are very high. The common people need money to meet their basic needs. The government’s apathetic attitude is worsening the situation. I request the government to take appropriate steps for the betterment of the PSM and the welfare of its employees.
