Mohammad Hafeez steps down as T20 captain

Published: April 3, 2014

LAHORE: Mohammad Hafeez has resigned as Pakistan’s Twenty20 captain after the team was sent packing from the tournament after a humiliating 82-run defeat against the West Indies on Tuesday.

After meeting the PCB Chairman Najam Sethi, Hafeez announced his decision at the Qaddafi stadium in Lahore.

“I accept the responsibility for the performance and have decided to step down. I want to thank the players, my family and the cricket board for their support throughout my tenure,” he said.

Hafeez is the only captain to have led Pakistan in two editions of the ICC WorldT20 tournament, after going down to the West Indies the 2009 champions failed to make it to the last four of the tournament for the first time in their history.

The all-rounder added that he was willing to play as a player under any captain. “I would offer my support to any captain. Previously too I have played under many captains and would offer my complete support to my replacement.”

Later in the day, Najam Sethi spoke to the media and said that Hafeez’s resignation shows that he is taking responsibility for the team and that it is a sign of bravery.

Basit Ali, former Pakistan captain and coach of Hafeez’s domestic team SNGPL, feels the resignation should not have been accepted by Sethi.

“It’s a bad decision which the chairman should not have accepted. I have a feeling that Hafeez was asked to step down and has been made a scapegoat for the disaster in Mirpur,” Ali told The Express Tribune.

He added that the PCB needs to invest in the future and should consider naming Ahmed Shehzad the new captain in the T20 format.

According to Ali, Younis Khan is the best choice to lead the team in the other two formats. “Shehzad should captain the T20 team; Younis has the potential and the experience to captain the team in the other two formats”.

While Ali thinks that he was hard done by, many former cricketers called for Hafeez’s ouster following the heavy defeat.

Hafeez also drew flak for choosing Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik in the squad that represented the team in Bangladesh as the two looked well past their prime during the matches.

What a shame… emotional decisions help no one. NS should try to bring maturity and stability into the system. But end of day, we are Pakistanis; reactionaries and love blaming others; especially the fallen ones… Pak team needs to work on its temperament on which least attention is given.Recommend

So again, our system is running on hit n trial. If Afridi had missed THAT six, our moods would have been changed altogether. Our quality bowlers went for 82 runs in 5 overs. Batsmen could not hit sixes more than 30 meters, and you have made captain their scapegoat. Recommend

Gentleman Hafeez. He is among those who bring respect, sanity and stability in Pakistan’s cricket after the embarassments and humiliation of 2010s. Crimes, jails, infighting, ball chewing….the list of embarassment is realy long……Hope we don’t go back to that….Recommend

Not only the performance, but the arrogance he displayed was mind boggling. When being asked about availing of services of Saqlain Mushtaq by West Indies, he stated that he (Saqlain) did not have a magic formula and he would not be bowling himself. Ironically Pakistani batsmen were bamboozled by West Indian Spinners.

Another one is Shahid Afridi. When Shoaib Maqsood was batting as if swatting flies, Afridi was seen gesturing to Moin Khan that the batsmen could have hit the ball for a four or a six. Sure enough, when his time came, he could not do anything.

Although a wise decision by M. Hafeez, but we should change our attitude now with our team and must accept defeats open-heartedly. The Australia, New Zealand and England cricket fans and critics are doing the same with their respective teams?

Sri Lanka lost 4 world cup finals during the last 7 years, have their fans also done the same to their team which we have done to our team when they lost in 1999 world cup?

The critics today who are shouting these days on media, haven’t they failed during their playing times. Like,

Muhammad Yousuf, who is regularly shouting these days, was playing during 2003 and 2007 world cups when Pakistan failed disastrously
Shoaib Akhtar, who is following the same pattern, has done the same in 1999, 2003 and 2007 world cups and always become “unfit” during key matches and when bowlers hit against him.
Javed Miandad was the part of team during 1996 world cup.Recommend

Great… but this is not enough as previously said. T20 is in the blood and bone of this nation, our natural style of cricket format. And the playing eleven is just a useless bunch of morons who has successfully made their way and encroached the playing eleven through backdoor cheating, with few exceptions. Dissolve the whole cricket related bodies, make a new cricket board and playing eleven after deep filtration so that the world knows what is our real talent of cricket and who are our real heroes of cricket.Recommend

Finally a good decision, the management and selectors should take the responsibility as well of playing useless shoaib malik and kamran akmal, Secondly there wasn’t any single left hander in the team who could’ve been the difference while playing herath or narine, badree etc. They even didn’t condider the only leftie in team(sharjeel) due to the always flopped kamran and shoaib.
Secondly they should think seriously about T20’s. Its quite different than ODI’s, you can’t simply defend like ODI’s in T20s…Moin should be sacked as wellRecommend
