Now it turns out that the party is in two minds about denying him the ticket. Clearly the Congress, reeling with the possibility of an imminent political demise, will find it easy to abandon the high moral ground in favour of waging a battle not by totally scrupulous means. Both India’s major parties realise that the fight for the throne of Delhi will take place in the lanes and bylanes of UP and that every seat counts.
On the eve of the previous general elections in 2009, BJP leader (and Rahul’s first cousin) Varun Gandhi had been summarily thrown into jail for threatening to “chop off the heads of Muslims”. A few weeks ago, the head of the Sri Ram Sene, Pramod Muthalik, better known for beating up girls as they wanted to participate in Valentine’s Day, was admitted into the BJP for a day or so before national outrage forced the party to throw him out.
Of course, the best known examples of political violence are found in the Gujarat riots of 2002, which Mr Modi allegedly did nothing to stop and indeed may have thus allowed the barbarous mobs to take revenge upon hapless Muslims, although several courts of inquiry have so far failed to indict him on any charge — as well as in the anti-Sikh pogrom of 1984, planned, organised and systematically carried out by members of the Congress party.
But according to well-known political analyst Mukul Kesavan, there is a distinct difference between the Congress and the BJP on the communal question, even though the 1984 riots killed three times as many Sikhs as Muslims in 2002. “Congress, by a kind of historical default, is a pluralist party that is opportunistically communal, while the BJP is an ideologically communal party that is opportunistically secular,” Kesavan said.
However, the BJP’s newest spokesperson as well as one of India’s best-known political analysts, MJ Akbar, would rather focus on the economic development of Gujarat under Modi’s rule during the past 10 years rather than on the violence in 2002, which he now believes were an aberration.
In fact, that is the biggest question of the current election: Should India learn to put the Gujarat riots behind it, just as it did the 1984 Sikh pogrom?
Many Indians believe that if Modi can become another version of Atal Behari Vajpayee –– who also had no hesitation calling himself a card-carrying member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the right-wing puritanical mother lode of the BJP –– then he may just be able to become the leader of all Indians. Question is, can the tiger change his spots?
From his comments at a Jammu rally last week, when he accused Congress leader AK Antony and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal of being “agents” of Pakistan, it seems as if Modi will hope to keep himself above the communal fray just as he has tried to do in the election campaign so far –– except when he simply can’t help himself lapsing back.
Increasingly though, the same Indians that Manmohan Singh’s reforms over the last 10 years have permanently lifted out of poverty and put spare cash into their pockets to spend, are now vociferously voting Modi. These people don’t see the essentially illiberal streak in Modi because they would rather focus on his ability to get things done. This is the second time in contemporary history when Indians are supporting a wilful suspension of civil liberty in the name of development and economic reform –– the first time being during the emergency ordered by Indira Gandhi.
Equally, Mrs Gandhi had a change of heart two years later and ordered elections in 1977, where she was roundly defeated... Can Narendra Modi learn from those who came before him?

Whether Congress is opportunistically communal or BJP ideologically communal makes not one iota of difference to the victims of the violence in 1984 or 2002 who suffered under both instances. It is time to throw them both out and save on time and energy on psuedo-intellectual conversation that is good only for coffee tables of Delhi elite, untouched by the suffering both have inflicted.
ET Mods - fact free comparisons of Modi to Hitler need to be rebutted with facts. Pls. Publish.
@Toticalling: Gujarat who has had riots every 2-3 years snce ndepence has been riot free for 12 years under Modi. Compare this to the deliberate and systematic policy of sending Jews to gas chambers. If you compare 750 Muslims and 254 Hindus being killed in a communal riot triggered by a mon of 2000 Muslims burning o ashes 58 Hindu pilgrims with sending to gas chamber 6 million jews - i question your judgment and sense of proportion.
Yes - the only comparison between Modi and Hitler is that both were democratically elected and evoked pride among local populations. So frankly the appropriate comparison is between Churchill and Modi.
One more thing: Sonia Gandhi met Imam of Jama Masjid to ask for Muslim votes. Please find me a single speech by Modi asking for otes on the basis of religion. Please also find me any speech by Modi where he has spewed hatred on minorities or announced policies that have religion as their basis - you will find plenty of Congress speeches that promise reservation for Muslims on the basis of religion. If someone promises a non corrupt regime with transparent grievance redressal without discriminating on the basis of religion and you call thaperson a hate mongerer simply because he refuses to appease Muslims - then one must question who is illiberal and/or hateful.
Great ! This is first time I read the truth about Gujarat riots. That is right that allegation on Modi is that he didnt control mobs with full heart. No body accused him that he started riots, other than rumors. In my view Modi was alleged for not being fair in rehabilitation. He tried to stop riot and within one or two days Riots were reduced. Thousands of rioters were arrested. Babu bajarangi was arrested by Modi's police.
Congratulations for being more or less fair and unbiased.
What a wrong comparison of Modi and Indira? Modi is not even in power and may not get an absolute majority. Indira Gandhi declared emergency and suspended civil rights. What has Modi done to get compared with rotten apples? If he comes to power and he proves to be another authoritarian then I guess you have something to write. But with the current status of Babus taking over the govt and ruling by corruption, it is high time someone gets tough and show the babus and policians the stick and make them behave well.
We will not know whether Modi is good or bad till he's given a chance to lead, right? Why not wait a couple years to find out before already deciding how bad its going to be if Modi comes to power, on the basis of what happened in 2002 when he was newly elected a CM & ignoring the growth of the state of Gujarat in the next 10 years under his rule. Congress has conned the public and its time for a change in a big way. I won't say Modi's the best leader for India (yet, atleast) but given his record of changing things around in Gujarat during his 2 tenures as CM, I feel he can really bring about a good change for India.
I liked this one.
A surprisingly balanced writing.
Modi reminds me of a German leader of earlier 20th century, who promised heaven, made autobahns and at the same time aroused hate feeling about a certain minority. He won the elections, but was disastrous for Germany in more than one ways. I hope Modi changes to become another Vajpayee, but hope and dreams are two distinct poles which need to be defined. I know Congress has been inefficient of late, but it is still a better option for India. Jews had no other country to support their brothers in nazi Germany; that is not the case with the minority not liked by Modi and some others in India. But I think majority of Hindus do not have such aversion against them.
If I recall correctly, "liberal" Congress is the one that water hosed the Nirbhaya demonstrators instead of talking to them. It was the one that arrested poor old Anna Hazare and the one that clamped down on Ramdev's followers in the middle of the night. It was the one that tried time and again to curtail free speech on the net. In fact, free speech advocates consider Kapil Sibal one of their biggest enemy.
If this is your definition of "liberal", I'd like to give "illiberal" a try. In the meantime, try digging elsewhere for dirt to throw on Modi. This doesn't stick.
