A panel of judges also said the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals – the two teams at the centre of an ongoing probe into illegal betting and match-fixing – should be barred from the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) beginning next month.
"In the place of Srinivasan, we propose to appoint an experienced cricket player like Sunil Gavaskar to replace him and function as BCCI president," Justice AK Patnaik said at a hearing in New Delhi.
"We are not removing anyone now, but Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals will not be allowed to participate in the IPL which commences on April 16," added Patnaik, who is head of the two-judge panel.
The proposals came two days after the same court urged Srinivasan to stand down as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to enable a "fair" investigation into allegations surrounding last year's IPL.
The bench is looking at a damning report it commissioned into wrongdoing in last year's edition of the annual Twenty20 tournament.
Released in February, the report concluded that Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan could be guilty of illegal betting on IPL games.
Srinivasan is regarded as the most powerful man in world cricket and is due to take over in July as head of the International Cricket Council.

@Tani: (in democratic country you can express your views within constitutional parameters. Etc) He sits on The Bench. Not in his Club. He has to choose to deny himself the luxury of talking nine to a dozen even if constitution permits him.A judge has to learn rectitude & reticence & be very choosy with words. I was not talking of Modi's guilt (the evidence would have been destroyed by his own Police long before case & he can never be proved guilty) or innocence. I mentioned only the Judge's premature exclamation in comparing him with Nero. That was a wrong thing to say. What proof did he have against Modi to make such loose talk? For an Activist Judge to keep mum when Salve fires a salvo against Dhoni does look surprising. If judges have "Always recommended" (names for jobs & indulged in nepotism/favours) its time they stopped that since it's "always" a bad practice. What is Gavaskar's "side"? Judge is supposed to take the side of Law, Justice, Fair-play. Not play favourites. May be Indians love & appreciate great Judges like V. Ramaswami,Soumitra Sen & AK Ganguli. All power to them. It still doesn't alter the fact the judge had no business to force their man on BCCI. But then he did succeed in getting his way, didn't he?
@rakib in democratic country you can express your views within constitutional parameters. About modi no court of the world can pronounce him guilty when there is no proof. He is was not on road rioting and the case is about rioting. But it was his duty as chief minister to proper manage the issue which he failed miserably. It's indian media and secular parties thats targeting him to blot him from his economic development success in Gujarat and make him loose election. But u cannot pronounce him guilty of killing when he didn't and wasn't even of streets. Harsh salve can say what if he wishes if feels enough shady matter there. The judges don't have to respond till case proceeds in free and fair manner and find dhoni guilty. The judges in india has always recommended the government in cases, others etc we don't find it wrong and it's not legal binding. Supreme Court never took sides or is biased, all it said was till the chief is head there's conflict of interest all parties will be scared to tell truth. Judges didn't even take gavaskar's side and told him to end all his commitments with broadcast if has to take role of bcci head, if bcci approves. And any way as Indians we appreciate and trust our judiciary and not corrupt politicians who knows they might suggest someone's with likes of suresh kalmadi..
@Tani: Since even an Obiter Dicta has might of judiciary behind it, a judge shouldn't speak loosely.. SC judge once called Modi a Nero having fun when Gujarat burnt. What happened to the case? Gave a "clean chit" to Modi & ate his words?! If the judge was sincere he should have merely suggested to Srinivasan to step down without recommending any alternative, which is not his business anyway, and left further course of selection process to the stakeholders within BCCI. Harish Salve formally calls Dhoni a liar when the man is not in the court to defend himself & the judge keeps quiet!! A judge should not be seen as playing favourites & shouldn't bat for Gavaskar or pitch for him howsoever indirectly. Besides, how is this man qualified even to recommend a name? What does he know of administrative competence or negotiating skills or lack thereof of Gavaskar? The man has set a wrong precedence now.
To all There is huge difference between "recommendation" and "ordering". The judge is merely suggesting, how BCCI can handle the body in the chiefs sudden absence when they put forth this argument. Now it is on BCCI whether it wants to follow it or not, or put forth their own new candidate. Don't know about laws in Pakistan, but Supreme Court in india has always put forth recommendation in different cases where it found fit. Nobody here is barred from suggesting.
To Judges: This is above your pay grade to decide who should be the next king of the cricket board.
Taking this precedent, as a next step, Judiciary will decide premier for the country?
How is a judge competent to determine who can best serve BCCI? Judge is inviting needless controversy & judicial interference is getting worse.
He is no legend. He single handedly destroyed cricket. And we all allowed it to happen. This outdated bloke should now spare everyone.
Good choice.
