PESHAWAR: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif has said that the recent meeting between Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and Babar Awan makes no difference to the PML-N’s future.

“One should not lose moral ground at the cost of politics. First come morality and ethics and then comes politics,” Sharif told reporters at the residence of PML-N General Secretary Iqbal Zafar Jhagra in Peshawar.

He said that the government must implement the Supreme Court’s verdict on the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) and avoid a tussle with the judiciary. “We [PML-N] will not support confrontation among institutions and the government must not force people to take to the streets,” he said.

Sharif said that the government must curb corruption in order to curtail the spiraling prices across the country. “It is the government’s duty to take decisions in the public’s interest so that prices are brought down and unemployment is controlled.”

Sharif said that the nation is waiting for reform in the governance system, the recovery of stolen national wealth, elimination of corruption, new job opportunities and proper law and order. “It is unfortunate if money meant for the people is embezzled and pocketed by certain people. In such a situation, no one will come ahead to support Pakistan in the future.”

He said that the Punjab government was maintaining good governance but said the federal government’s wrong policies were affecting the provincial government’s performance. “Approval of the 18th Amendment has increased the prime minister’s responsibilities and he must make drastic decisions in the interest of Pakistan and its people which are within the democratic framework and accord with his party’s manifesto,” he said.
