The provincial education department's special secretary, Syed Zakir Ali Shah, who holds an additional charge for the textbook board, confirmed the revisions to The Express Tribune.
"The elimination of the mention of non-democratic heroes was undertaken as per the democratic government's policy that was reiterated by former education minister Pir Mazharul Haq and current education minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro," said Shah.
According to the textbook board technical affairs director, Yousuf Shaikh, the text that has been eliminated had been systematically included to 'glorify' the regimes of former dictators — General Muhammad Ziaul Haq and General Pervez Musharraf.
"A chapter on Abdul Sattar Edhi has been introduced in the general knowledge book for grade three, while chapters on Malala Yousufzai and Arfa Kareem have been added in the social studies book for class four," said Shaikh. Meanwhile, chapters on Benazir Bhutto and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto are going to be a part of grades V and VI, respectively.
"For the ease of students who have to carry multiple textbooks, the board has decided to publish the new textbooks in a single jacket, having multiple books for the relevant grade," said Shaikh.
Controversial decision
The textbooks that had to be based on the recommendations of the 12-member advisory committee on textbook reforms will be made available in April for the start of the 2014-15 academic year. "The textbooks have been sent for publication after being approved by the committee members," said Shaikh.
However, at least two committee members, when approached by The Express Tribune, denied any knowledge about the changes that the textbook board officials are claiming to have made. "I highly doubt that the members of the committee have unanimously endorsed these changes as I have not done so," said Fateh Muhammad Burfat, a committee member and professor at University of Karachi's sociology department. "We have not even finalised the draft for the revised curriculum yet."
For Dr Burfat, the inclusion of a chapter on Malala Yousufzai will make the textbooks more controversial since it will invite a difference of opinion. "I do not hold anything against Malala but I strongly feel that the textbooks should reflect a national consensus rather than promoting controversies and disputes," he said. "The culturally-rich Indus Valley, having a history of thousands of years, has an abundance of undisputed heroes, who can be a part of the textbooks."
He explained that the very purpose of the committee was to remove the existing contradictions in the curriculum and to promote evidence-based knowledge rather than focus on controversies and mythology.
While Shaikh did concede that though there was some hesitancy and disagreement amongst committee members over the inclusion of a chapter on Malala in the grade four social studies book, the writer had ultimately convinced the committee members of its inclusion.
Welcome change
Meanwhile, Edhi Foundation spokesperson Anwar Kazmi was appreciative of the decision to include Edhi as a national hero. "What I should say is that it is better late than never," he said. "Edhi Sahab has never shown an interest in personal publicity, but we at the foundation feel that he should have been introduced in the list of national heroes much earlier."
For Kazmi, the inclusion of social activists and humanitarians as our national heroes will inspire the younger generation to aspire to similar ideals.

The real heroes of Sindh should be included in the Sindh textbooks. The names of usurpers, tyrants, unpopular and undemocratic men must be expelled from the books and their glorification stopped. The 18th amendment has already taken out the name of Gen Zia from the official records of Pakistan. Apart from whether we like them or not the inclusion of most popular heroes of Sindh would be fair for the masses of Sindh. No country in the world has fanatic dictators as heroes in their history or textbooks except Pakistan. Our love for kings and sheiks knows no bounds the richer and more autocratic they are the more we love them. Let us spare our children for a change.
@Ch. Allah Daad: "Party"? So, you agree with the headline of these news that education is getting politicised! Mind you sir, no "party" should have any role in chalking out syllabus.
ET its very unfortunate that you had to caption the article as Education-gets-politicised.After reading it I had the feeling that education finally was going to be De-Politicised by bringing in the REAL heroes of the generations to come
No part of Pakistan history (good or bad) should be erased. But it is important to highlight those that have a positive impact on Pakistan and can encourage & motivate the youth.
You can't deny that out 66 years half the time was under some form of marshal law. It is embarrassing to the country’s democratic struggle, but it is and will be a fact of history. The military would surly likely to be remembered for its fallen heroes, game changers (i.e. female fighter pilots), etc. Country’s do not fix their problems by sweeping things under a rug… they fix problems by learning from them.
Zardari and co. has named just about every thing after Benazir now they want to force kids to read about her and not about Ayub Khan who was the only real leader Pakistan has ever had dictator or whatever...!!
Extremely a bold step! Should promote the liberal people.
The first three - fine. But the Bhutto's are not heroes. Period. They should have a chapter in social studies, but as part of the political history chapters and not as national heroes!
And removal of zia ul haq - best thing I've read today!
Benazir Bhutto all the way.. She created new history by being only woman prime minister in an islamic and conservative country like Pakistan.
What about Bhagat Singh who fought against the British and revolutionize the Independence movement. He hailed from the Pakistani punjab. Why have we disowned him? because it will be contradictory to project him as hero when we say all non Muslims are foes. How many of us know that he was given capital punishment on 23rd March at Shadman Chowk, Lahore.
Messed up Sindh... messing up generations to come.
I like Sindhi warriors pre-Pakistan, they defended Sindh, please include them.
What about Dr. Q. KHAN who gave Pakistan a "Nuslear Power"???
I extremely refute the publication of Malala Yousifzai, i dont thing that she is national hero. Have you people ever read his book its completely based on the controversial? A part from Edhi Sahab as well as Arfa Kareem, They are Patriotic Pakistani and i must appreciate their efforts and i would like to work for them. Arfa was the luminary of Pakistan and she was the ambassador of education as well as she had promoted our country.
Why not a whole subject on "Bhutto Gardi"....!
Insaniyat and Sex Ed first please....?
how about a chapter on Liberal Heroes Veena malik and Meera ?
Pakistan is copying an unsustainable system of rationality adapted from the West. I believe that Islam invites us to view all sides of the issue, and with Pakistani textbooks limiting the perspective views of children from an early age, we're destined to go down the same route of cultural mediocrity that many Western nations are battling. We must not copy successful nations, but become successful in our own right.
Lol @ chapter on bhuttos by ppp govt. Yaar hud ho gai lol
Should include Asifa and sisters as well!
Please include Zardari, Altaf and Tappi as well
@nonooo: Yes.... who else Nawaz Sharif? Zia ul Haq?

What is disturbing is the trivial way textbook contents are changed according to the political climate of the time. Shouldn't things as important as this be left to a non-political, dedicated institution that will guide academic content independent of politics and religion? Having said that, the inclusion of Arfa and Malala will be inspiring to children. Also, the untruths in curricula regarding the history of the region must also be addressed.
This is a positive step, except for the inclusion of Bhuttos.
Edhi, Arfa, Malala.. Fine!! But the basic purpose was to include chapters on ZA Bhutto and BB... Umm?? The next provincial govt, let's assume MQM, will replace chapters on ZAB and BB with Altaf Bhai, right? And in Punjab there should be chapters in Sharif Bros?? PPP is the most incapable political party in terms of good governance but is the best on such acts of stupidity and fake-glorification of its founder and leaders.
Edhi Saheb YES, Bhuttos NO.

Hand out a Rs. 5,000 e-book reader once. It'll be cheaper than the cost of a single year's text books. You can then distribute textbooks to the e-book reader wirelessly for as many years as the student stays in school. So a) It's cheaper b) much less of a burden for the student because now he has to carry just one device instead of a bag full of heavy books c) allows all sorts of new possibilities like OTA updates every time a new political party comes in power and you want to revise history to suit the new rulers' political leanings.
Great move. Malala makes us proud!
Its a shame that our children will not learn about the great Generals of this nation and appreciate their sacrifices :(
What about purging the derogatory remarks about Hindus. There are so many Hindus staying in this country.
This is adorable trend to include the real civilian heroes as mentioned above but there must be heroes of armed forces who really sacrificed for defending our borders like Brig. Ali Malik, Iftikhar Janjua, Gen. Akhtar Malik, Major Aziz Bhatti and Cecil Chaudhry just to mention as examples for 1965 war and so on. A chapter should truthfully reflect the parties and personalities who struggled for creation and the opponents who opposed the creation of Pakistan that can give unbiased and true historical real picture of events. Honest living nations do not change history but keep it as good or bad and learn lessons from their past to keep future bright. Forgetting heroes like Dr. Abdul Salam is a regrettable and truly biased fact to change the historical pride of Pakistan.
