Supreme Court declares 238 appointments in EOBI illegal

Apex court says new appointments should be made on the basis of merit and quota system rules.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday declared the appointment of 238 workers  in the Employees Old Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) null and void, Express News reported.

A three-member bench - headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali - heard the EOBI illegal appointments case today.

A petition was filed against the illegal appointments and corruptions in EOBI in 2011.

The court said that these appointments, during the period September 2011 to May 2012, were made without merit and hence declared them illegal.

The apex court said that the new appointments should be made on the basis of merit and quota system rules, adding that the chairperson of EOBI will be responsible for making the new appointments.

The National Accountability Bureau was also ordered to investigate the illegal appointments including that of former president Raja Pervez Ashraf's son-in-law Raja Azeemul Haq Minhas in the World Bank as the Executive Director.

The Supreme Court also ordered that investigation against the suspects involved in the illegal appointments should be carried out and a report regarding it should be presented to the court within one month. Contempt of court proceedings will be started against those found guilty.
