Public Health: ‘Diabetes leading causes of blindness’

Principal of PGMI says number of cases of blindness caused by diabetes “alarmingly” high in Pakistan.

LAHORE: “Diabetes and blood pressure are the leading causes of declining eyesight,” said Anjum Habib Vohra, principal of Post Graduate Medical Institute (PGMI), said on Saturday.  He was addressing a seminar held at the PGMI organised by the Pakistan Glaucoma Society and the Pakistan Ophthalmological Society. He said that glaucoma was the second biggest cause of blindness. He said the number of cases of blindness caused by diabetes were “alarmingly” high in Pakistan. Professor Nadeem Riaz, Professor Muhammad Moeen, Professor Abdul Hayee and Dr Nasira Inaiat delivered lectures. They informed the audience headaches and redness of eyes were initial symptoms of glaucoma.
