KARACHI:

The opposition parties in the Sindh Assembly have submitted a requisition summoning Sindh Assembly session to discuss drought and the subsequent deaths in Tharparkar district.

Around 52 members of the Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pakistan Muslim League - National and Pakistan Muslim League - Functional reached the assembly secretariat on Wednesday morning and handed over the requisition application to the secretary of the provincial assembly.

“More than 150 deaths of children and negligence of government officials have exposed the performance of provincial government,” said Khawaja Izharul Hassan of the MQM. “We have requested the speaker to call a session so that members can get a briefing about the situation and the government efforts in dealing with it.”

Meanwhile, speaker Agha Siraj Durrani said the provincial government had already decided to hold the session. “The chief minister has sent the summary to the governor, the session can be called on government’s request next week,” he said.

The rules of the provincial assembly say that the speaker has the right to call the session within 14 days on the requisition of opposition. Usually the governor is the competent authority to summon the session on the advice of the provincial executive - the chief minister.

After the passage of 18th Amendment, each provincial assembly has to complete 100 days in a parliamentary year. The assembly has finished 60 days and has yet to meet its 100-day deadline by May.
