The Sindh High Court (SHC) issued notices on Monday to the representatives of various lawyers’ associations in the province for making frequent strike calls and boycotting legal proceedings.
The notices have been sent to the Pakistan Bar Council, the Sindh Bar Council, the Sindh High Court Bar Association, the Karachi Bar Association and the Malir District Bar Association.
Senior lawyer Vakil Ahmed Qureshi had approached the court last June against the four lawyers’ bodies for calling frequent strikes of lawyers and boycotting legal proceedings. Qureshi had argued that the calls for strikes by the lawyers’ regulatory and representative bodies were ‘unconstitutional’ as they caused unnecessary delays in case hearings and paralysed the judicial system.
Headed by Justice Irfan Saadat Khan, the bench issued notices to the respondents to file their comments by next date of hearing.
