Capital to have slaughterhouse soon

CDA’s technical committee approves abattoir.

ISLAMABAD:

The capital is expected to soon have its own slaughterhouse after the civic agency’s the technical committee approved the establishment of a new abattoir in Sector H-9/3.

“The PC-1 of the Rs190 million slaughterhouse will be presented before the Capital Development Authority’s development working party (CDA-DWP) for final approval in the next meeting,” said CDA Administration Member Amer Ali Ahmed.

He said that work on the first phase of the project, which will cost Rs60 million, will start after the CDA-DWP approves the plan. CDA has already allocated Rs50 million for initiating the project, he added.

Ahmed said that the CDA has already obtained a mandatory environmental impact assessment report of the project from the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency.

“The environmental body has given a go-ahead for the project, as in its absence people slaughter animals at private slaughterhouses or in the open, adversely impacting the environment,” Amer said.

Ahmed said that the slaughterhouse would be established on 20 acres and would be completed in 10 months’ time. He said that the authority would recover the amount in three to four years by renting out the facility. The slaughterhouse will have the capacity to accommodate 2,000 to 2,500 animals a day. The building will be constructed on 10 acres, while a grazing area will be established on the remaining 10 acres.

Ahmed said that the CDA had consulted butchers’ association for recommendations for acquiring the latest machinery.
