AIG Special Branch Shafqat Malik explains the force needs bomb defusing robots which can “lift the device, x-ray it to give you eyes on what’s inside and dismantle the bomb.”
He shares the BDU has used robots to neutralise bombs, “it’s very effective, but not in all places. The robot doesn’t have any capacity to work underground.”
According to a BDU official, some of the robots they have used are only a hindrance because of their inability to negotiate rough terrain – something Sulaiman Khan’s robot can apparently do with ease.
However, the BDU’s robots have come in handy. On January 1, 2013, “Our robot defused an 85 kilogramme IED in a barrel in Peshawar,” shared Malik.
Discussing Khan’s project, Malik explained it sounded hopeful. “He needs to approach the right person, he can always come see us, and the robotic technology we possess.”
Another addition to the BDU has been sniffer dogs – a very welcome addition. AIG Malik claims the dogs can spot a bomb very easily and more swiftly than humans. “We have two dogs in each of the seven divisions, though Peshawar has more.”
“These dogs are really expensive and are worth every penny,” laughs Malik.
