Multibillion-rupee scam: Key accused in EOBI case arrested

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested Abdul Qayyum, an accused in the EOBI corruption scandal. He has confessed to paying bribes of Rs250 million to chairman EOBI Zafar Gondal as well as Rs50 million to an important leader of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). According to sources, Qayyum sold a building, Crown Plaza, in Islamabad for Rs1.2 billion while its market value was only Rs250 million and thus inflicted a loss of Rs600 million to the national exchequer. According to sources, a PPP leader from Gujrat also received Rs 50 million in this deal and convinced Gondal to make the deal. Sources said further details are expected from Qayyum.
