It was the shortest tenure any government in Delhi has ever had. After just 49 days in power, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) resigned from the Delhi government on Friday, leaving their rivals – the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – with what may prove to be an even bigger political headache.
“I am a small man and I have come from among you. To stick to our principles, we are ready to give up the chief minister’s post a hundred times over,” Kejriwal said at the end of a day of high drama, emotion and passion.
“I believe in the constitution of India. I took oath of office to uphold the constitution, not to uphold the orders of the central government,” he told a crowd of charged AAP supporters, all of whom were waving a broom – the party’s election symbol.
Kejriwal resigned after the Delhi Assembly defeated a motion to pass the Jan Lokpal bill, an anti-corruption legislation which seeks the appointment of an independent body to investigate graft cases.
The bill had to be routed through the lieutenant governor of Delhi and the home ministry since Delhi is a centrally administered territory. Kejriwal and his colleagues had objected to this route, saying the Constitution was silent on the central government having any jurisdiction on the activities of the state government or the assembly.
A day before, fisticuffs broke out in the legislative assembly when BJP clashed with AAP.
The Congress and BJP have said they have objections not against the Jan Lokpal bill, but the manner in which Kejriwal and his colleagues were forcing the agenda and projecting themselves as the sole crusaders against corruption.
Kejriwal had accused the two parties of banding together against him after his government filed police complaints of corruption against India’s biggest industrialist, Mukesh Ambani. The Ambanis, Kejriwal alleged, colluded with the ruling Congress government to inflate the price of natural gas extracted from offshore oil blocks by the Ambani group.
He claimed the Congress and BJP had taken a stance against his government after being influenced by the Ambanis – an allegation hotly denied by the two parties.
Kejriwal’s resignation will free him and his party members from the responsibility of running the capital and will allow them to focus on campaigning all over the country – something the Congress had hoped to avoid when it helped the AAP form the government.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung will rule Delhi for the foreseeable future.

@NYC Don't compare imran and kejriwal..imran is sympathiser of Taliban.he is also nicknamed Taliban khan for that..while kejriwal is mechanical engineer that too from IIT.he also has passed civil services exam and have left the job of income tax commissioner for public
AAP was forced to take this principled stand , even at cost of losing power. No one gives them chance to win majority of seats even Parliamentary elections, hence it is main parties Congress and BJP got exposed. AAP won elections on plank of anti-corruption , hence if Jan lok pal was not allowed to place in Assembly, Kejriwal was constrained to resign. Time for Indian drive out corrupt, communal politicians. Whether AAP will have impact on results on elections, only time will tell.
@Nikki: Oh really, so while the entire Pakistan media is after the politicians of Pakistan for corruptions allegations and what not, you think those politicians are reflection for Pakistan society? May be you are right.
@NYC: You definitely needs some coaching on Democracy. Democracy means nothing would be passed if majority does not want it. In assembly , majority did not pass the bill and so it was not made a law. Now , AAP did not have absolute majority in the sense that their own MLAs were not enough and they had support from Congress and independent who could have been voted against the bill. But then , that is democracy which Pakistanis are new at. As far as "coaching" from Mr. Khan to AK of AAP, well he may give some tips on bowling but other than that , I don't think they are in same league. AK is a former bureaucrat while IK is a playboy cricketer turned politician. Had it not been his image and fame of his former Avatar of cricketer, he would probably would not even being anywhere in politics. On the other hand, AK rose to horizon from nothing and no where. Although I am not AK Fan at all and i think he bit more than he could chew nevertheless, it is a lesson for him. But what AAP did in a year, PTI took 17 years for that and that too with known "electable" candidates.
@NYC:
KP passed anti-corruption laws? So then what happened ..any FIRs filed against any corrupt person so far ? ...In Pakistan..all laws are just bunch of papers.
Seems to be a face-saving exit for Kejrival.
@NYC: Parliamentarians reflect their society and norms/values.Intergrity and sincerity work immensely.
@NYC: You seem to be a fish without water if you do not mention "India"
Bravo Mr Kejriwal, death before dishonor.
Congress and BJP are united for protecting corruption in India same as PPP (the corruption Party) and PMLN are united to protect corruption in Pakistan. Unfortunately we do not have an Aam Admi Party here. PTI has been taken hostage by the corrupt and traditional elements of politics in Pakistan thus we would need a real common person's party here.
Fight for the premiership you may bring change then.
Easy come easy go-
* ..Delhi Assembly defeated a motion to pass the Jan Lokpal bill, an anti-corruption legislation which seeks the appointment of an independent body to investigate graft cases.* Where are all the Indians now who used to claim arrogance over their "democratic institution"?? What good is democracy when the assembly cant even pass an anti-corruption bill. Please learn something from the KP assembly New Delhiers. They passed 4 major anti-corruption laws in a matter of 4 months. And really? 49 days? He should get "some coaching" from Imran..that guy has been fighting for 17 years now...
ET I hope you dont censor my comment just because it was pro-PTI and anti-Indian. Thanks ;)
