Ambushed: Gunmen kill policeman, injure two others

A police official was killed and two others were severely injured when unidentified militants ambushed their vehicle in the remote area of Gadoon in Swabi late Thursday night.


Swabi DPO Sajjad Ahmad told journalists the attack took place around midnight, explaining Gadoon Industrial Estate SHO Muhammad Riaz Khan was patrolling Malikabad area on Gadoon-Topi Road with sub-inspector Ziaullah and Head Constable Muhammad Wisal at the time.

DPO Ahmad said the militants were hiding in a graveyard and opened fire at the police van when it was passing by, leaving all three policemen severely injured. The injured policemen called for assistance, after which a heavy contingent of police arrived at the spot and opened retaliatory fire, forcing the militants to flee.

SHO Riaz told The Express Tribune the wounded officials were rushed to Topi Civil Hospital and then later shifted to Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar where Head Constable Wisal died due to excessive loss of blood. Ziaullah, meanwhile, was shifted to the hospital’s intensive care unit.

The SHO said he was shot twice and is in stable condition. He informed Ziaullah joined the police force last year and is the son of ASI Bahadur Khan, who was killed while saving other police officials during a raid in Topi.

The body of Muhammad Wisal was taken to Police Lines, Swabi where DPO Sajjad along with other district government officials offered his funeral prayers. The deceased was later shifted to Rustam area of Mardan where he was given an official burial.

A case has been filed against unidentified militants and an investigation is under way.
