Pakistan hopes for CERN membership

The government wants to extend cooperation with CERN in fields of cancer treatment and sustainable energy.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said that Pakistan is committed to enhance scientific collaboration with the European organisation for Nuclear Research CERN and is hoping to become an associate member of the organisation.

Nawaz told a four member delegation that included Director for Research and Scientific Computing Dr Sergio Bertolucci and Head of International Relations Dr Rudiger Voss.

The premier praised the organisation for its notable achievements and added that the government would like to extend its spectrum of collaboration in areas related to cancer treatment and sustainable energy.

Nawaz indicated that the cooperation of CERN provides an incentive to those who are working in the field of Science and Technology and thus two the nation as a whole and that ‘he was hoping to visit the organisation in January but circumstances didn’t let him.’

Earlier In January, PM Nawaz Sharif had cancelled his visit to CERN owing to a precarious situation in the country.

Chairman Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission Dr Ansar Parvez was also present at the meeting.
