Fahad Aziz, 30, was arrested on Saturday night when he was en route to his wedding. Police said Aziz was allegedly involved in incidents of target killing, extortion and other crimes in the city.
IG Sindh Shahid Nadeem Baloch took notice of the incident and ordered an inquiry under the supervision of the DIG East. Four Karachi police officers were also suspended.
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon also took notice of the case and said no one will be allowed to misuse their authority. He assured that justice will be served and those involved in the torture of Aziz will be punished.
SSP East Pir Muhammad Shah said Aziz was taken to hospital when he complained that he was in pain. Shah said claims of police torture will be investigated according to law.
Hospital sources told Express News that Aziz’s body bore torture marks when he was admitted and that his condition has improved.
Shah Faisal Colony Police had arrested Aziz under Section 54 of Pakistan Penal Code which allows police to take suspects into custody and interrogate them.
MQM had protested the arrest and called for change in top leadership of city police.
MQM's reaction
MQM leader Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui addressed the media Sunday evening and claimed that the medical report confirmed that Fahad was a victim of torture by the police.
Siddiqui alleged that the police were extorting Rs220 million from the city of Karachi every day. He added that over the past few months, many MQM workers had disappeared under suspicious circumstances. He appealed to the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and other authorities to take notice of this situation.
Haider Abbas Rizvi also addressed the media reiterating the party’s stance.

@Sibte Hasan: Pls come up with a proof. Who in Karachi doesn't know who sends the extortion slips wrapped in a bullet? If you think (of your pure hatred) that its MQM, then its sheer oblivion.
@Khalid: Rawalpindi had one incident and army was called in to control any untoward incident. In Karachi, army intervention is considered as slap on democracy. While here in Karachi, daily killings, mugging, extortion and kidnappings are just normal. No country continues to stay in its shape and form in long term with this criminal ignorance of the fed govt.
It is all Law of Karma.
@ Urban Legend.. Your comment makes no sense!
If even after sixty-seven (67) years we have not matured in our thoughts and actions for each other as HUMANS, then pray that the citizens of this country do not "cross the Rubicon." Do we want to become like Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, among others??? The fault for this lies squarely on the leaders of opinion-making like, politicians, intellectuals, mullahs, teachers, military, and media. It can be reversed by economic reforms, action against corruption, massive and wide-scale media publicity and actions taken against law breakers (local, militants, insurgents). Salams
Continue ignoring the crimes in Karachi, and the whole country would bleed! I wish the bigger province and Islamabad could learn from what happened in 1971!
"Siddiqui alleged that the police were extorting Rs220 million from the city of Karachi every day." This is imp to note that now the extortion money is not going to the real "deserving" and they do no like police to share it with the police. It is sickening to see 80 policemen being brutally killed yet their lives are somehow less imp than those of party workers. Why do foreign citizens only interested in some and not the law enforcing authorities? If we are so concerned about the fairness then let us give control of the city to army and disarm all the terrorists? This is the only fair solution and army must do it.
Racism of big province against the rest.
@Aysha M Please also comments on MQM's extortioning.
@The Only Normal Person Here: It is worse than 1992, with vibrant media as we have today LEAs are getting away with their crimes
@Fi: @zubair: So you are encouraging LEAs to operate above law, it could soon be your turn if this high handedness is not checked in favour of rule of law
kar bura so ho bura Remember MQM is not a party of all angels.
MQM to remember how they deal with people in Karachi esp those who donot pay bhatta. Good reason from him to take asylum in UK, Canada.
Karma.
There should be no torture or extra judicial killing but the blame lies squarely with the law makers themselves as they have and will not draft a witness protection bill because many of themselves would then be open to prosecution. And the judges never convict anyone anyway. LEAs have little choice then. Top leadership of police should remain the same.
Good job MQM. 92 is not going to be repeated
Suspension is no solution. These LEAs will do this again. They just dont have any respect for Karachites because most of them are from outside Karachi. We have seen Rangers shooting a pleading boy Sarfraz Shah, then it was taxi driver with a small boy, they couldnt think of anything to stop the speeding vehicle if at all he was not pulling it over. They shot the man in ramadan, around Iftaar time. Then there are scores of cases of extra judicial killings. I am not voting for MQM if they fail to get us local policing in the metropolis like all the other mega cities of the world. Just enough of treating us Karachites like second grade citizens and leave us at the mercy of killers in uniform.
