For the women: Uks Research Centre focuses on disaster-struck women

The organisation launched their 2014 desk diaries on Sunday.

KARACHI: The Uks Research Centre successfully launched their 2014 desk diary on Sunday during an annual event.

The diary, titled “Women of Pakistan: Rebuilding Lives Courageously after each Disaster and Crisis,” focuses on the disasters that have affected Pakistan and how they have been reported in the media from the perspective of women.

Uks director Tasneem Ahmer spoke about the work done by the research centre and then focused on the diary. Ahmer said that Uks has been launching the desk diaries since 1998 and focus on a different social theme every year, such as health, education and violence against women.



The director then played a selection of Uks radio programmes that talked about the women who have been impacted by recent disasters and how they are rebuilding their lives.

Sumaira Jajja of Dawn shared her experiences of reporting on the recent floods and earthquakes that have affected the country. She emphasised that very few women venture into disaster reporting and talked about the importance of following up on disasters so as to ensure a smooth rebuilding process.

Prominent columnist Zaheda Hina focused on how one must keep a positive outlook but also not forget the miseries faced by those who have been impacted by the disasters. She said that people suffer financially and lose their loved ones but women are also subjected to kidnapping and human trafficking .
