Italian town to fine women for revealing outfits

Authorities in a small Italian town have decided to fine women who wear miniskirts.

LONDON: In a move that appears to be an act of moral policing, authorities in a small Italian town have decided to fine women who wear miniskirts or show too much cleavage, a media report said on Friday.

Women will face fines of up to 500 euros under new rules to be introduced in an Italian town, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The town's council also wants to ban men and women from wearing low-slung jeans as part of a list of 41 new rules that "every good citizen must respect," the report said.

Luigi Bobbio, the mayor, said it was all part of an effort to "restore urban decorum and improve coexistence" by targeting people who were "rowdy, unruly or simply badly behaved.”

Playing football in parks and gardens and swearing in public will also be banned under new regulations which will be put forward for approval at a council meeting Monday.

If the new regulations are approved, offenders will face fines of between 25 and 500 euros.

Italy has become entangled in a web of petty rules and regulations in the last two years after the government of Silvio Berlusconi gave councils extra powers to tailor laws to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

Across the nation, towns have banned a range of seemingly innocuous activities such as building sandcastles on the beach, kissing in cars and feeding stray cats.

Muhammad Iqbal | 14 years ago | Reply Well there is no point in being dissappointed or even comparing it to radical Islam or whatever you think is or is not Islam. The Italians are not muslims but come from the Christian faith, so theres no chance that they are inspired by our practices because whatever action taken by this little town is actually what the Bible has taught them, but we are not aware of it as majority of Christians have only clung to a concept and have no concern with life living guidelines in their book. Refer to the below: "Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control" (1 Timothy 2:9) "But every woman praying or prophesying with her head uncovered disgraces her head, for it is the same as if she were shaven. For if a woman is not covered, let her be shaven." (1 Corinthians 11:5-6) These are just two references, more than a dozen are at our disposal in the Bible. So, kindly point out 'Radical Christianity' as there is no such things as radical Islam. There are radical muslims for sure, but no such thing as radical Islam.

Abdul Haseeb | 14 years ago | Reply While people may oppose this under the banner of so called freedom, there must be rules to restrict the freedom so that other people shouldn't be affected by the actions of others within their limits of freedom. The banning of the above mentioned clothing articles is welcome because these clothing items only show the shallowness of the person wearing them that they need these to attract other people rather than the beauty of their personality. If you let people to decide everything, then come tomorrow people will be roaming around freely without any clothes at all. So every society needs some rules to function as a society. If you cannot respect other members of your community then you should not live in the community.

In other way they are coming towards the teaching and implications of Islam. and the people who are saying that it is against the freedom of expression should first read the definition of that. freedom of expression doesn't mean that one should start abusing other in public or should start dressing like this that if gives bad effect to community and children. This is a great step and hope more and more nations will follow it soon.
