The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has announced to launch ‘Sehat ka Insaf’ – a health awareness project – from January 26. The decision comes days after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared Peshawar the world’s largest reservoir of polio.
The plan involves around 12,500 PTI volunteers who will carry out the drive in Peshawar district and will later cover other districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) as well.
“Volunteers will raise public awareness against nine diseases, including polio, dengue and measles,” said PTI’s focal person for polio and city district president Younas Zaheer, adding their initial focus is on Peshawar following the WHO report.
Zaheer said the volunteers will initially be trained to assist health department officials in the campaign. He added 100 to 150 volunteers will offer their services at each union council level after being administered proper training, saying PTI Chairman Imran Khan will inaugurate the awareness campaign on January 26.
PTI Provincial General Secretary Khalid Masood told The Express Tribune the party has decided to fully support the health department to not only eradicate the poliovirus, but also to help inform people against other diseases. “We will help the public guard itself and take precautionary measures against deadly diseases,” he said.
Four more polio cases were reported from Pakistan on Sunday, taking the toll for the year to five. The National Institute of Health, Islamabad has confirmed the cases – all from North Waziristan.
According to the institute, the infected children had not received any dose of oral polio vaccines as vaccination has been banned in North and South Waziristan for almost 18 months now.
The day when the last polio case was reported in North Waziristan Agency, WHO declared Peshawar the largest reservoir of the virus, with around 90% of Pakistan’s cases genetically linked to the city.

@The Economist: and what,s about the media propaganda against both parties
Public awareness is one of the best tool in overcoming a lot problems especially in health. This the best investment one could make if done properly. Good luck and keep it up!
@azam orakzai: Mr Azam every right measure is taking in KPK with available resources. Not a single peeny will ube used for personal benefits, PTI are doing best in worst war ridden area of Pakistan. KPK is not as same as Punjab. There war is on going on its boarder . U should know these 12000 people took decision to put there lives on high risk but for sake of PTI help they wana do that.
@azam orakzai: ...if you dreampt about SWAT turned into SYDNEY within six months, then you are a fool
Instead of wasting resources on campaigns they should invest in hospitals and clinics. Lady health workers are refusing to work.in KPK now. Spend money where it matters. I know many of the IK emo fans wont agree to any sensible thing..looking at the comments it seems IK has already solved the spread of ppolio in KPK. More than 600 people died in Swat due to Dengue. There was no check then. All these marketing gimmicks will.mot.help them in any way im the long run. Being from swat I am very well aware how there were only 4 doctors to deal with every 500 patients. This is beyond embarrassing for me to have voted for a KPK govt where they focus on cheap politics rather than hard core governance. I feel really really bad. Being affected by the horrors of no facilities, and looking at this adds salt tp my wounds. This is just so sad.
Great work PTI.........Please move fast we r with u... This is one of the best initiative taken by any political party...great going Imran Khan
May Allah bless all these volunteers and safeguard them. Good job Khan and PTI!
This is tabdeeli. The tabdeeli razakaars doing real work. God bless IK!
Parties like PTI and AAP (in India) are changing the game of politics by bringing youth and fresh thinking into politics, which is a positive sign for democracy.
Glad to hear that, Al the best KPK and PTI. lets bowl out polio forever,
Too little too late. Looks like the leader is finally waking up.
