KARACHI:

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has formed a four-member committee in its 27th Governing Board (GB) meeting – held at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore – to review all decisions that were taken by the Interim Management Committee (IMC).

The meeting was headed by recently-restored chairman Zaka Ashraf, while others present included Muhammad Rafiq Bughio, Masood Hamid Anwar, Haroon Rasheed, Commodore (retd) Mirza Arshad Hussain, Jawad Sajid Khan, Imtiaz Ahmad, Wajahatullah Wasti, Chairperson Women Wing Bushra Aitezaz, Chief Operating Officer (COO) PCB Subhan Ahmad, Secretary to the Board Barrister Salman Naseer.

“The governing board members constituted a committee comprising Hussain, Bughio, Anwar and Subhan to review the decisions taken by the IMC during which the Board of Governors (BoG) could not assemble,” said a PCB statement.

The BoG members appreciated the Islamabad High Court (IHC) for a “fair verdict and thanked the Patron of PCB for his support in bringing stability to the Board”.

“The BoG discussed routine matters relating to the affairs of PCB and expressed their confidence that the chairman will ensure proper representation in the upcoming meeting of the ICC,” it further stated.

The members discussed the reported proposed changes to the structure of the International Cricket Council.

“In general we discussed issues which immediately need to be taken care of such as naming the U19 team and World T20 probables, but nothing was discussed in bringing major changes in the PCB setup,” claimed a GB member.

‘No authority to review IMC decisions’

An official close to the matter revealed that, tactically, the four-member committee has no authority to review the decisions taken by the IMC.

“The decisions of IMC have been protected by the IHC itself, thus the newly formed committee has no power whatsoever to review these cases for any reason and to regularise them in the next meeting,” said the official. “Whatever decisions have been taken by IMC will have to be implemented to avoid any further complications.”

He added that two of the four members which include Hussain and Subhan are non-voting members, thus they cannot have their say while Bughio was handpicked by Ashraf to vote in his favour in the board’s elections. “So the credibility of the committee could be called into question.”

The official further stated that the matter of PCB chairmanship was far from over and the saga could take another twist if the IMC or Najam Sethi decided to take stay against the decision.
