PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government on Wednesday requested the Election Commission of Pakistan to delay the local bodies poll in the province, Express News reported.

The elections were scheduled to be held on February 28 but the provincial government has now requested that they should be delayed till the last week of March.

Recently, the Supreme Court had allowed the ECP to issue a new schedule for elections in Sindh and Punjab.

K-P

The local bodies bill was passed in the K-P assembly on October 31.

It was decided that the polls for upper bodies will be held on party-basis while elections in lower councils will be on non-party basis.

Past figures

Below are a few figures from the last local bodies elections held in the country.

Total Number of Voters - 63.4 m

Total numbers of Union Councils - 6,132

Total Number of Polling Stations - 62,483

Total number of nominations filed by candidates - 266,427

All these figures are subject to substantial increase, and indicate how these elections are even more difficult to organise than this year’s parliamentary elections.

@Mogambo: Didn't Imran Khan promise to hold the local bodies elections in 3 months? Either he really wasn't serious about holding elections in 3 months or just too plain dumb to have promised it. In any case he has lost credibility on one more front. Now its been 9 months and he wants to delay for another month, which is just an excuse to delay again and again and again. He doesn't want to give powers down to the local level, just as PMLN and PPP. No difference here.

@Pakistani Patriot: 6 years? you should ask.this question to pmln and ppp coz they were ruling in punjab and sindh for the past 6 years. Still they r unprepared and ecp has rescheduled the dates for them. PTI has gone way ahead by bringing in biometric polling just with in 6 months. Great effort by PTI. I congratulate them on their commitment and vision.
