KARACHI: Four-time champions Wapda registered an important win in the Pakistan Premier Football League (PPFL) when they defeated NBP 1-0 at the Railways Stadium in Lahore on Monday.

NBP contained Wapda in the first-half, but Arif Mehmood scored the winner in the 48th minute of the match.

According to Wapda coach Tanveer Ahmed, the current season will be a defining moment for his team.

He said that Wapda finished the previous edition of the league on 12th position and barely escaped relegation; however, the teams’ performance now is fuelled by passion and determination to regain their status as one of the top teams in the country.

With Monday’s win, Wapda stand in second place with 48 points next to KESC, who are on top of the table. Meanwhile, KRL are in third position with 44 points.

“We wanted to improve this time and regain our status as a top club,” Ahmed told The Express Tribune. “The 2012 season was our worst. And in many ways, we have changed our side since then. Now I’m working with new players and they are all very talented, especially our midfielders.”

The coach stated that his team’s competition would be against KESC, KRL, and PAF while Army may worry all the top teams as well.

“Of course the competition is now between the top sides, but Army will still try to break into the top rankings. KRL have two tough matches, while our biggest test will be against KESC next month.”

He further said that Wapda midfielder Saadit Ali was a good find.

“Ali plays well and I believe he will make a mark in the national side someday,” said Ahmed.

“In the Pakistan squad, the most memorable defenders come from Faisalabad and Ali is also is also from there. It’s been a trend. The defenders from there are strong and aggressive.”
