LAHORE: Chaudhary Muhammad Ishtiaq of the Professional Group has been elected as the new president of the Lahore Bar Association (LBA) for the term 2014-15. Ishtiaq secured an easy win, defeating his opponent GA Khan Tariq of the Friends Group by 1613 votes. The turnout, however, was low and less than 40 per cent of the lawyers cast votes. Talking to the media, Ishtiaq said his win showed the legal fraternity is no longer buying into the agenda of lawyers who only worked for personal benefits. The Professional Group is led by Hamid Khan, while the Friends Group is led by former Supreme Court Bar Association president Asma Jahangir.
