Why the Left lost in India

Letter January 10, 2014
Aam Aadmi Party won because it was able to gain credibility through its actions of speaking out against corruption.

JAMSHEDPUR, INDIA: This is apropos the article “Why the Left is still important to India” (January 10) by Jyoti Malhotra. The Leftist parties in India failed in the rural parts of the country because they failed to follow the ideology they were propagating. Their leaders at the local level (whose actions are the most visible to the people) often turned out to be corrupt, with little credibility, and used violent methods to keep control, and in the process, completely lost the faith of the people. The Left parties’ propaganda that all the rich and industrialists exploit and their extreme stand just to oppose these segments without understanding the consequences caused the death of industries and flight of capital and entrepreneurs to other states like Gujarat, which are friendly and where the economic environment is conducive to business and industrial activities.

The Aam Aadmi Party won because it was able to gain credibility through its actions of speaking out against corruption, calling for better governance and its pro-poor stance, but will certainly lose if it goes for the Lok Sabha election countrywide without a mechanism to filter out the dirt which will try to enter its fold and destroy its credibility and reputation of being honest and dedicated to fair governance.
