The survey, which was conducted between 2011 and 2013, covered seven countries: Tunisia, Pakistani, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
The section devoted to gender issues included a question on how women should dress in public. Respondents were shown six head shots which showed women wearing a shuttlecock burka, a niqab, different forms of headscarves and one without any head covering.
[infogram url="" height="840"]
Of the 3,523 Pakistanis surveyed in the report, 32% favoured a niqab (photo 2). The abaya (photo 3) was the second most popular category with 31% of people voting for it. In comparison, only 3% of respondents voted for the shuttlecock burka and only 2% for the woman shown without a veil or scarf. 51% of the Pakistani respondents were male.
For most countries, the fourth image, which shows a woman wearing a headscarf, was deemed to be the most appropriate but in Lebanon the majority of respondents - nearly 50% - voted for the sixth image which shows a woman without any veil or scarf.
Dress as they please
When asked whether women should be allowed to dress as they please, nearly half the respondents from Tunisia, Lebanon and Turkey - if not more - voted in favour. However only 22% of Pakistanis said women should be able to dress as they wish, followed by Egypt at 14%.
Gender issues
The survey also asked respondents if women should always be expected to obey their husbands. 38% of Lebanese respondents disagreed with the statement whereas only 8% of Pakistani voted against it.
Also, when asked about the importance of love as basis for marriage, only 7% of Pakistanis said it was important.
In most of the surveys on women and gender, Pakistani respondents voted conservatively but when asked whether men make better political leaders than women, 29% of Pakistanis disagreed. In comparison, only 17% of Egyptians, 21% of Saudis and 28% of Iraqis disagreed that men make better political leaders than women.

@ajeet: Meanwhile indians in particular hindus run to Saudi Arabia, last estimated indian population in Saudi is over 1million increasing everday, would be interesting to know what are your views on hypocricy
@Sheharyar: Islam HASN'T made any kind of mandatory ruling on face coverings, that's the problem. Face coverings are absurd in my not so humble opinion. They make a woman's identity, voice and existence disappear behind a dark cloth. Why don't you try wearing a niqab for a week and then pass comments on matters that are not of your concern. Cheers.
@Bakhtiyar Ghazi Khan: "What right do Hindu fanatics have to comment on Muslim women’s dress? These responses are not welcome here. Yes, we know you hate Islam, Pakistan, and Non-Indians, now please move along and spread your venom elsewhere." If we hated any of those whom you have reffered all of them would not have opted to stay in India. Mr Khan you are are really great entertainer.
@Saim Baig: Oh the irony my friend "In 1947, George VI relinquished the title of Emperor of India and became King of Pakistan. He retained that title until his death on 6 February 1952, after which Queen Elizabeth II became Queen of Pakistan"! It was British loyalism that gave you Pakistan, the goras have been feeding you from day one.
@Farhan How is Niqab or Burqa sign of backwardness? If Islam has made covering the face mandotary for women, then it has some reasons behind it. Think about it.
All of Pakistan's problems are because females are not circumcised.
@LunacyAsailam
Very perceptive insight into how and why Indians and Muslims look differently to this ancient land of India, that is/was Bharat.
@Farhan: No it is Not backward. Hijab and Niqab in no way hinder women in doing their day to day work at office or elsewhere. Its the narrow minded people like you who create a problem. Problem is not with the Niqab, its with the people that hate it.
Hijab with full makeup or are the ones with no Burqa/niqab just better looking models.
Surveys need to be more representative, This survey had preordained result and it did not portray all as equals. either.
For an elite survey group, this survey just don't stack up.
Totally agree. Islami Jamooria Pakistan should make it compulsory.
@Asad Mehmood: Not me.
@Bakhtiyar Ghazi Khan: Pull your site from internet then. Internet is not an Arabic invention to be used only by you.
Why this poll is on ET ? Women are free to wear whatever they want to and this doesn't need any poll .. Men and Women are created equal. They are like the two arms in one body !
@Ajeet: Dude, i am pakistani but that is the funniest comment.
Geo Pakistani.. .. thanks for your vote to modesty, safety and haya.. JazakAllah Khair
This is both appalling and terrifying. It's 2014; countries have sent shuttles to the moon; a couple have sent manned missions to the moon (with women on board no less), and people in Muslim countries are still fighting about what a woman should wear, if she should have the right to decide that and promoting a slave master relationship by stating a wife should obey her husband. How shameful. This is embarrassing.
Looks like many have watched the video. I would like to hear from those who have a 1st hand experience with such type of cruelty on women!
What right do Hindu fanatics have to comment on Muslim women's dress? These responses are not welcome here.
Yes, we know you hate Islam, Pakistan, and Non-Indians, now please move along and spread your venom elsewhere.
The woman at no.5 was how most of the pakistani women used to dress.
if one takes out last two options, 90% pakistanis want women to dress in a way that was not used to be their culture.
This study is more of an urban study and shows the more educated the pakistanis become, the more they leave their simple culture.
Its is most unfortunate.
@Nasir Bhatti: Credible reference to which claim?? Are you for real?? I bet you will be or already are a terrible un compassionate lousy husband, let this poor girl be.
Funny part is i took the survey at the end and after submitting clicked "Previous results" and the results shown are totally opposite.Out of 1725 responses 639(37%) voted for Picture 6 and the trend goes on for other questions. Seems like the team searched for all the conservative Pakistanis they could have find and questioned them or just to cut the chase went to their mates to get answers how they(mates) assume we Pakistanis feel based on the perception made by their biased media.
@LunacyAsailam: Your comment laced with disdain makes you sound foolish and delusional, not patriotic. India is your motherland but it's not a weakness to admit you didn't have control over it for centuries and whether you like to admit it or not, you had nothing to do with the establishment of Pakistan. The British had control over the subcontinent and denying that makes you sound irrational. Furthermore, no offense but where do you think India would be without those minor "glitches" as you call them? Your bigotry in so called secular India is poorly veiled. So much for a "secular democracy."
Great result...N0 ^ gets only .5 v%...95% WANT Parda for woman...and muslims hate westoxicated scum everywhere.
@1984: are you writing about Pakistan or some other country who told that we are not going outside without male its shocking to read that where u live?How can they do when they cannot even go outside with having a male relative with them???? please visit Pakistan first. i am surprised only male are writing about us. i love to wear hijab/niqab doing job and free move where ever i want to go without any one.
@goggi (Lahore):
Rubbish. Half of Pakistan is under the control of Islamist extremist and college kids are an extreme minority in Pakistan. To make matter worse the liberals seems to spend more time on the internet than voting.
@ajeet: "Good that we gave a separate country to them. Else, they would have trashed mine." This exactly is the mindset that created Pakistan.
Islam has played a vitai role in protecting the virtue of women that is why islam command women to cover their body.
@Farhana Yousaf: My respects for you. Persevere and you shall become the master. Just be patient and carry on.
@Umar: Are you an expert in theology?
Can't we have some sacks for these ladies ?
My message finally spreading in Al-Bakistan
@saeed: Saeed sab, What is the most appropriate dress for men? Why should some one criticize the short dress? not understood the relation in niquab and short dress?
@Abdul Salam: I Pakistan or in Saudi, how many Burka Poosh women did the suicide or bomb attacks?
How can they do when they cannot even go outside with having a male relative with them????
Thank God you guys have a separate nation. A special thank you to Mr. Jinnah.
Let us respect the right of women to dress as they please. Those who do not like the way they dress can mind their own business.
@Saim Baig: yeah !!! we gave you a country or rather you took a part of mine,and look what you did ,you made it into two countries,now that is funny and it will be even funnier when it is going to become three countries.lol.
They may want women to dress "modestly" while walking in public, but I'll bet the same people want women to wear nothing when they are surfing the internet.
@ajeet: and you wouldnt have had a newspaper to go trolling where you could vent and make yourself feel valid....
@Irfan: Yes but non Muslim women. They would like to hide Muslim women.
Lebanon is one of the most liberal Muslim-majority country.
@Shahid Aleem:
I Pakistan or in Saudi, how many Burka Poosh women did the suicide or bomb attacks?
You are speaking the language of West and Fake & Paranoid Liberals who hate any sign of Islam. Thanks God, only 2% people (as per this survey) like you, are there in Pakistan and whatever you say or do, this 2% would be decreased but not increased?
Modesty resides in your mind ............. not in your clothes
@saad zafar:
I think clothes should be banned altogether. Lesser the clothes, lower will be the security risks. No need for selective stripped searching.
@ Saad Zafar, Bro, pls read below mentioned verses from Qur'an Surah Noor:31 Surah Ahzab:32 Surah Ahzab:33 Surah Ahzab:53 Surah Ahzab:59 Surah Noor:19 If you have Faith in the Words of Allah....
@Saad Zafar: Fully agree with you.
@Dee: good
i m sure u r wrong u must have surveyed among librels if u would survey among common people of pakistan (except islamabad nd lahore) it will not be 32 % but 90 %
I just read the results of the Tribune survey... Phew... Thanks Pakistanis... And well done.... Very different from the results in the article above...
Niqab for all men and women with unruly beards...YES
All the pretty ones can be FREE :)
Who would have thought Pakistan would one day become as jahil and Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan...
Please please can we have the original Pakistan back....!!!
Nikab has everything to do with Islam. I have utmost respect for women who show their true Islam beliefs in face of this propaganda to Pakistanis away from Islam.
Niqab and Burka are nothing but symbol of oppression of Women. Just because i criticize niqab and burka does't make a nudist friendly guy. Niqab is great threat to security and hence therefore should be banned ASAP
Peace
Reports shows that modesty is alive in Pakistan
Good to see the results from Pakistani and Saudis.
If one check the data, at least 94% Pakistani want cover the head of women and Hijab for women and only 6% wanted to be remain uncovered but our media shows 98% women uncovered and without any Hijab that's the title should be "94% of Pakistanis say.........." instead of 32% of Pakistanis.......
So media and TV Channels should answer who they are representing then? Please reduce this FAHASHI and URYANI in Dramas.
Well for starters .. I am not from Pak . I am from the subcontinent. I felt woman num 5 was best dressed to go in the public .She is covering her hair ( which is supposed to be an aphrodisiac ) and also stylishly dressed. A woman has to show her face , how else will people see the intelligence in them .And BTW woman num 1 and 2 are fully covered. how do I know that its not a man inside that speaking in a woman's voice.
@saeed: Yes it is a symbol of backwardness
Survey does not mention how many men in Pakistan want to see women in a bikini. I bet it would be more than 68%.
"hiding " That is an inappropriate word to use. They cover themselves to be modest. Thanks for being tolerant.
Of the 180 odd million people 3,523 surveyed. I'm sure that is a very decent sample size.
Trash.......the survey must have been done in areas with Fundo Bearded Areas... Go to the villages and see the Burqa/ niqab....specially in summers......
Award for the most entertaining comment goes to:-
'Where’s the survey for how men should dress?'
ROFL
If Islam providing equal rights for man & woman then why man impose his thinking on the female. They should their own right to what to wear what should not.
@Ajeet You gave us a country??? Funny.. It means you are direct decendent of Lord Mountbatten...
