Karo-kari: Girl ‘freed’ from father, brother
A college girl, allegedly held in captivity by her father and brother, was freed by Khairpur police on Tuesday.
On a tip-off, a large number of police raided Kamal village in the outskirts of Khairpur in Economic Zone police limits and rescued Shaista Phulpoto, a student of class 12 in Government Girls College, Khairpur.
In her statement to the police, Shaista claimed that her father, Mohammad Saleh Phulpoto, and her brother, Saddam Hussain, killed her elder sister, Sobia, after declaring her ‘kari’ over four months ago. When Shaista protested over the killing, her father and brother declared her a ‘kari’ with a man in the village and locked her in a room. Shaista claimed she was afraid her father, uncles, Nisar Ahmed Phulpoto and Ghulam Sarwar Phulpoto, and brother, Saddam Hussain, were waiting to kill her.
On Wednesday, she was produced in the court of second civil judge, Khairpur, who ordered the police to take her to Darul Aman. Economic Zone SHO Ghulam Rasool Langah said the girl has been shifted to the shelter and a case has been registered against her father, uncles and brother, but no arrests have been made.
