Building nuclear reactors

Letter January 08, 2014
I think it would be wise for authorities to set up a panel of experts that carefully examines all aspects of project.

KARACHI: This is with reference to Zahir Kazmi’s article “Pakistan’s energy security” (January 7). The article is a well-written one and clears some misconceptions. However, the issue of building nuclear reactors close to Pakistan’s biggest city requires further discussion. I have a feeling that the writer may have tried to answer the concerns raised by Dr Pervez Hoodbhoy et al in their article published recently in Dawn.

I think it would be wise for the authorities concerned to set up a panel of experts that carefully examines all aspects of this project. Dr Hoodbhoy is an internationally recognised and well respected scientist in this field and can provide pertinent and valuable advice to the government on this issue. Rushing into a project as sensitive as this one just to compete with the US-India deal would be unwise and unsafe.
