Banana republic or failing state?

Letter January 05, 2014
It would have been far better if General (retd) Pervez Musharraf could have been dissuaded from returning to Pakistan

LAHORE: Those who opposed the creation of Pakistan and have not accepted it even after 66 years would be delighted at the events which took place on January 1. Where else in the world can a retired general, who has been charged with subversion of the Constitution, dare to defy courts and get away with it?

Pakistan was created through a constitutional struggle, but unfortunately after the Quaid’s death, it has been ruled by despots, dictators and midgets, for whom the writ of the law was not important. The result of our collective follies is the unbridled chaos we witness today within our borders and the terrorism of all forms threatening the lives of our citizens.

It would have been far better if General (retd) Pervez Musharraf could have been dissuaded from returning to Pakistan, or forced to leave before charges of high treason were filed by the government. Now that charges have been framed and the judicial process has started, no one should be allowed to intervene. As it is, the militants do not accept our Constitution and any such move would only strengthen such elements.
