Local government polls: Female candidates want elections on time

PPP govt had decreased the number of women seats to 22 per cent in accordance with Article-51 of the Constitution.

KARACHI: Amid uncertainty about the schedule of elections for local bodies, women candidates from different political parties have demanded that the polls be held on time so that legislations to empower women across the country could be passed. This was observed during a seminar, titled “Policy dialogue- Connecting women empowerment with local bodies elections”, conducted by different NGOs and members of civil society on Monday. Women candidates from Pakistan Peoples Party, Pakistan Muslim League-Functional, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Muttahida Qaumi Movement and nationalist parties participated in the seminar from across Sindh. Law minister Dr Sikandar Ali Mandhro said that the PPP government had decreased the number of women seats to 22 per cent in accordance with Article-51 of the Constitution.
