The civil society while appreciating the local government bill for the capital territory has initiated a debate on the proposed law.
To present recommendations for improvements in the draft Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Local Government (LG) bill, the Centre for Civic Education (CCEP) and the UNDP are organizing a consultation on Monday, December at 10am at a local hotel here, said a press release.
“The 18th Constitutional Amendment gave powers to the provinces, strengthening federalism in Pakistan,” CCEP Executive Director Zafarullah Khan said adding that this transfer of power is not possible without an effective local bodies system.
An LG system for the capital territory was long overdue.
The ICT LG bill was tabled in the National Assembly early this month which when passed will allow the citizens to participate in the governance of the city.
Political leaders, civil society representatives, academia, technical experts and development professionals are expected to participate.
