ABBOTABAD:

Although the process of delimitation for village and neighbourhood councils has not yet been finalised, the Tehreek-e-Suba Hazara (TSH) has expressed its concern over the process, claiming the method is not transparent and aimed at pre-poll rigging by the ruling party in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).

TSH chief Sardar Baba Haider Zaman alleged the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government is following the same old agenda of discrimination, which, he said, is evident from the delimitation of village and neighbourhood councils across K-P, especially Hazara. He said the government, in a bid to achieve political mileage, is overlooking the rules and policies that it itself had made for the local bodies elections.

“Usually, a locality with a population of 2,000 is entitled to be made a village council; but the revenue staff has made a village council out of some areas with a population of 5,000 or 6,000 people,” he said. Zaman termed the process unfair and said it was aimed at depriving them of funds and appeasing areas of the government’s choice. This proves the PTI government is not loyal to the cause of ensuring equal rights to people, he said.

TSH senior leader Engineer Sultan Khan said if the government does not revise the formation of village councils following its own rules devised for the polls, TSH would take to the streets. The party has always struggled for the rights of the people of Hazara, and would not desist from any sacrifice required for the cause, Sultan said.

Meanwhile, an official at the revenue department said objections coming from the public regarding delimitation were being looked into. He said the process was quite transparent and subject to further revision by the government.
