Pakistan celebrated the event with patriotic fervour and a 21-gun salute was fired in the founder's honour at his mausoleum.
The Pakistan Army provided security at the ceremony which was attended by Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan and Karachi Additional IG Shahid Hayat, among others.
Major General Nazir Ahmed also held a parade and laid a floral wreath on the Mazar.
President's address
President Mamnoon Hussain said Pakistani people "have made many sacrifices, shouldering not just the burden of wars, but also various natural disasters."
He paid tribute to Jinnah, adding that the representatives of the people were working to bring Quaid’s dream to a reality.
Father of the nation
Jinnah was born in Karachi on Dec 25, 1876. He was the eldest of 7 siblings and received his early education in Karachi and Mumbai.
He went to London for higher education where he obtained his law degree in 1895. Jinnah joined the Indian National Congress in 1896 and became a member of the All India Muslim League in 1913.
In 1916, he was made the leader of the League in 1916, three years after he joined.
His health began to deteriorate in 1940 and he passed away on September 11, 1948, shortly after the creation of Pakistan on August 14, 1947.

@Someone: We broke up the country, they wont take us back, its the camp where we are heading, just bear with us, may be a decade more @Usman Masood: Pls put us in a camp, that is where we belong
As usual the prime minister and the president didn't find time to go to the mausoleum for paying homage to one of the founding fathers of Pakistan.
@Someone: @Vikram: I think you guys have one track mind. You forgot to include this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971BangladeshGenocide I note from the article that up to 3 million people were slaughtered and thousands raped. We should perhaps address this as well before we accuse other states of violence against muslims but this is clearly genocide. I recommend that you read the definition of "genocide". @FT ... If you exclude them, you would find that Pakistanis have better figures than Indians. May I politely ask where you got your conclusion? I would love to see them because I live in UK and trust me all research points to the continued downfall of muslims. We have the highest crime figures in UK and unlike you, here is the proof (page 11): http://www.parliament.uk/briefing-papers/sn04334.pdf Also to show where the earning brackets of Indians and Pakistanis (and also welfare intake) you should read this article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/markeaston/2010/11/workbenefitsand_ethnicity.html (if the link does not come right then google "BBC Work, benefits and ethnicity uk"). You will note that Indians are the highest earners in UK (above whites) and Pakistanis are the lowest and highest claimants of welfare. It is about time we should address our own problems and stop accusing others of our failures.
@Vikram: I totally agree. This very detailed article also goes in great depth to show the appalling conditions of Muslims and minorities in Hindu India.
You should better pay your attention to these headlines published by our own Indian newspapers:
This is how Indian Muslims are treated in India (No need to talk about Kashmiris) http://www.outlookindia.com/article.aspx?288907 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002Gujaratviolence http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DemolitionofBabri_Masjid
Not only Muslims, other minorities suffer aswell: http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/10/29/india.sikhs/index.html?iref=24hours
These are only a few examples of our Indian attitude towards minorities, If things like these tend to continue even in 21st century then there is no need wo wonder if many new independant states like Pakistan will come into existence! We have not learnt any lesson from our mistakes and we fully deserved the creation of Pakistan in 1947!

@Iqbal: First of all your analysis is full of istortions. Here is what the report says: Indian Muslims are twice as likely to be unemployed than Indian Hindus are.
The report also says: Among South Asians, Indian Muslims do better than Muslims from Pakistani or Bangladeshi backgrounds - and better than Sikhs.
The report is not a comparison but rather a statistical one. As Indian Muslims are a much smaller population than Pakistanis and Sikhs, the statistics and samples would vary and tilt to some extent which is the case here. As a small group, they are doing well, but that does not prove they are more well off than Pakistanis. The Pakistanis are a larger group and since the report relies on averages, the average would be low as the whole population is taken into account rather than focusing on the affluent class. And it is no secret that many Kashmiris from a rural background live in UK who are a part of this sample. If you exclude them, you would find that Pakistanis have better figures than Indians.
poor Jinnah..Prime Minister has no time to pay homage to the founder of Pakistan
137 years. A lot of years.
@Ayesha M. You MQM supporters need to either go back to India, or respect M.A.Jinnah, and be grateful for all that he has done. A shameless nation indeed.
Thank you Mr. Jinnah for forcing us Indians to allow the creation of Pakistan. Without you it would have never happened. We now see the wisdom of your vision.
@omair shahid: You seem to suggest that the Indian Muslims are worse off. I want you to put your thinking cap on and ask yourself is it really true? To judge your statement I looked for independent proof of whether it is true. I decided to look where neither hindus nor muslims are in majority and found this article based on UK government's research (also the land where Jinnah had his education) http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2002/feb/20/race.immigrationpolicy Note one of the conclusions of the government sponsored research: * Indian Muslims do better than Muslims from Pakistani or Bangladeshi backgrounds * These are not my words but of UK government's. In case you have learning difficulties let me gently say that the Indian Muslims are doing far better then Pakistani Muslims (presumably you and definitely me). India can boast that they had several Muslim Presidents and Bollywood is disproportionately occupied by Muslims then hindus. You have put your racist cap on and decided to play the racial argument but could not offer any independent proof to support your argument. While you are it you may also want to investigate whether Pakistan can boast the same achievements as India when it comes to minorities in their status. Let me just warn you, I did and could not find them to the same level. Also, you have not offered any arguments to say that the link which I gave earlier on and written in Islamic Turkey is wrong.
@Iqbal: Had we stayed with India we would be part of their economic boom. Today, the Indians are the highest earning bearers in UK and USA and that is the proof.
Sir, please cut the crap. Why don't you reveal your real name. Just to put the record straight, it is exactly this Indian irredentist mentality that has kept the subcontinent hostile. As soon as you pull your head out the sand and realise that Pakistanis have rejected your idea of an akhand Bharat, the sooner things will be normal.
Today, the Indians are the highest earning bearers in UK and USA and that is the proof.*
The majority of Indians overseas drive taxis or do menial labour jobs in the Middle East. The few rich ones who escaped India are an exception.
@Iqbal: You are welcome to leave and move to India.
@Aysha M: Please feel free to move to India, and also take the MQM crowd with you.
@All: No need to get senti over Iqbal, he's a frequent reader of Express Tribune from across the border. Too bad that majority of Pakistanis don't give a hoot about his Akhand Bharat aspirations!
"My message to you all is of hope, courage and confidence." (Quaid-e-Azam,Muhammad Ali Jinnah). Love you Quaid!
We congratulate the nation of Pakistan on the birth anniversary of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Ali Khan DET, United States Central Command
@Iqbal: If we would have stayed in india we would face the same faith As Indian Muslims are facing go and see Indian Muslims situation they have no say in india only a few area and if you are saying pakistan is going to end in the near future than you dead wrong pakistan is here to stay inshallah and is getting better slowly.
North Koreans do it better.
@M. Emad: ‘Pakistan theory’ is the best bad idea of Jinnah. I totally agree. After reading this it is evident that Pakistan was a bad idea and soon to collapse. http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/default.aspx?pageid=438&n=jinnah8217s-nightmare-what-went-wrong-in-pakistan-2011-05-19 For those who are saying that more time should be given are clearly not in the know. There are other countries who were created after Pakistan and they are miles ahead of us. Had we stayed with India we would be part of their economic boom. Today, the Indians are the highest earning bearers in UK and USA and that is the proof. Instead of focusing into moving into 21st century the State still teaches hatred towards minorities as shown in this report: http://dawn.com/2011/11/09/pakistan-schools-teach-hindu-hatred/#idc-cover Am I surprised that the West does not trust us now?
Pakistan.....country for ever InshaAllah
Thank God for Jinnah. Thank God for Pakistan. Don't let our failures let the dream go sour.
@M. Emad: Why don't you go read newspapers about your Bangladesh? I am sure plenty is happening in your country right now.
@M Emad Pakistan is our identity, it is our love and it is our pride. Bad things happen everywhere but we are positive, InshAllah we will come out of these crisis.
If you have any problem then leave this bad idea with your whole family instead of being a hypocrite. Shame on ET for publishing such comments.
@M. Emad: what about Sheikh mujeeb ur rehman?? (N)
@M. Emad: you said it so well, thank you
@M. Emad: Enemies always say such things about their counterparts...:)
We love you our Pak Sar Zameen Founder
'Pakistan theory' is the best bad idea of Jinnah.
