Karachi blast: Case not yet registered

'Since last night six suspects have been taken into custody,' says DIG East.

KARACHI: A case has not been filed of the blast near Old Sabzi Mandi area of Karachi on December 20 that had targeted the former Mauripur police station chief, and killed at least two people and and injured 24 others, Express News reported on Saturday.

According to DIG East, the case was not registered because the assessment of the blast could not be done.

“Investigation is being done regarding every aspect related to the blast,” the DIG stated.

“Since last night six suspects have been taken into custody,”  he further added.

Express News correspondent Nadeem Khan had said that according to initial reports, former Mauripur SHO Shafiq Tanoli was in the car with his driver and two guards that was targeted by the bomb. It had initially been reported that Tanoli had been killed in the attack, however, he, along with four other police officers only suffered non-fatal injuries.

An initial inspection by the bomb disposal squad had revealed that between two to three kilogrammes of explosives were planted on a motorbike that exploded next to the left-side of the car and that the bomb contained ball bearings as well.

The dead and injured were shifted to Abassi Shaheed hospital and another private hospital.

Tanoli had recently been shifted from his post as SHO Mauripur and was heading the Special Investigation Team for District West. He was also the investigation officer in the Wali Khan Babar murder case. Tanoli had also conducted operations against elements aligned with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and other gangs in the Mauripur area.

He has previously escaped assassination attempts as well.

Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan had taken strict notice of the blast and sought a report from IG Sindh.
