Learning from past mistakes

Letter December 19, 2013
Why has the scheme not been debated in the National Assembly?

LAHORE: The Nawaz Sharif government is spending a lot of money on the media campaign for launching the Prime Minister’s Youth Loan Programme, which will be managed by his daughter Maryam Nawaz and cost Rs100 billion. My question is: why should Ms Nawaz be chosen to head the programme? Couldn’t someone, who was not related to the prime minister, be appointed to this post? The present situation amounts to nothing but misuse of authority for one’s personal projection.

This is not the first time that Nawaz Sharif is using government-owned banks to lend billions, with little chance of the loans being recovered and one should be reminded of the controversial Yellow Cab scheme when he was prime minister the last time around. Why has the scheme not been debated in the National Assembly? Why has the prime minister, as it appears, not learnt from his past mistakes?
