KARACHI: The Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) and the Citi Foundation announced the launch of the 7th Citi-PPAF Microentrepreneurship Awards 2010 programme here on Tuesday.

The programme will identify small business owners that have successfully utilised loans and grants from various organisations providing micro-credit in different parts of the country.

“A national advisory council comprising well-placed professionals from civil society and donor agencies, intellectuals and academics has been formed to oversee the programme and interview short-listed candidates,” explained PPAF chief strategy officer Ahmed Jamal while talking to the media.

He added that about $32,500 will be disbursed in awards to individuals selected by the council. “The awards are aimed at raising awareness and providing support for micro-entrepreneurs by highlighting their talents and accomplishments in the investment and donor community throughout the world,” said Jamal.

He expressed hope that they would help “create the next generation of microfinance networks, build more inclusive financial sectors and lay foundation for a flourishing microfinance industry.”

In July this year, the World Bank pledged $250 million in support for the PPAF that is to be disbursed over a period of five years.

A PPAF official said that outreach of PPAF now extends throughout 127 districts of the country and covers projects like microcredit, water and power infrastructure, drought mitigation, education, health and emergency response interventions.
