Massa is targeting the upcoming South Korean Grand Prix to secure a place in the top five to aid Alonso’s title chances, as it is now virtually impossible for the Brazilian to win this season after he claimed only four points from the last two races.
Massa’s performance has been under scrutiny after he crashed out of the Japanese GP in the first lap but is confident that he can make an impression this weekend.
“Firstly we need to qualify well and after that, I want to be in the middle of the battle for the drivers’ championship, fighting with those five drivers who are chasing the title, which is the best thing I can do to help Ferrari’s and Alonso’s aspirations,” Massa told ESPN F1. “Korea will be the last of a trio of races and I’d like to arrive back for my home race with a good result. I know that everyone in the team, at the track and the factory is completely pumped up for the challenge of these last three races and I’m equally keen to give them my best shot.”
Alonso, who is 14 points behind championship-leader Mark Webber, is expecting Massa to bounce back at the upcoming race. “This race could start to be decisive for some and for me it’ll be important to be able to count on my teammate,” said Alonso.
