Citizens’ initiative: Rights network launched in capital

An awards ceremony to recognize human rights defenders for their courage and dedication to protecting the lives of vulnerable groups was organised by The Asia Foundation (TAF) here Monday, said a press release.


An initiative named Right to Expression, Assembly, Association and Thought (REAT) Network was also launched on the occasion. REAT Network is an independent network composed of 26 civil society organisations from ten districts dedicated to promoting the rights of religious minorities in Pakistan.

TAF Country Representative Gareth Aicken highlighted the foundation’s long-standing commitment to human rights as enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan. Dutch Ambassador Frans van Rijn and Naeem Shakir spoke about rising extremism and holding the state accountable for ensuring equal rights of every citizen.

State Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Pir Aminul Hasnat Shah distributed awards of excellence to 15 human rights defenders from all over Pakistan.

In his closing remarks, Law Secretary Zafarullah Khan said that human rights violations should be viewed holistically and urged for interfaith harmony and tolerance. He reiterated the government’s committed to the promotion and protection of human rights.
