PESHAWAR: Criticising the proposed land disposal policy of the provincial government on Thursday, the National Education Council (NEC) – a body of private education institutions – termed it a ‘joke’.

Addressing a news conference at Peshawar Press Club, NEC Deputy Chairman Nazar Hussain said the proposed policy violated certain rules and regulations. He added that under the proposed policy, plots for educational institutes would be auctioned instead of being allotted through a draw as done previously. He also dubbed the policy a “joke”, adding it should be immediately deferred as it was not acceptable and the previous policy of 1992 be implemented instead.

Hussain said implementing the proposed policy would be tantamount to auctioning the education system in the province. He said the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which claimed to uphold the rule of law, and ensure transparency and accountability, was undermining its promises by imposing an “illegal” policy.

He also lashed out at the Awami National Party (ANP), local government and Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) for taking unnecessary and unjustified steps in the previous government. Hussain complained heads of private education institutions and organisations were not consulted before formulating policies.

The NEC deputy chairman urged authorities not to follow the footsteps of the former ANP-led government. He alleged lawyers representing the local government and PDA had, in the past, misinterpreted statements before the court. He also accused the PTI-led government of favouring the well-to-do and capitalists.
