Springing into action: Govt to probe 41 ‘fake’ prisoners
Out of 41, only two prisoners are convicted and the rest are under trial in central and Malir jails.
KARACHI:
Following the prime minister’s orders, the Sindh government has formed a committee, under the supervision of the home department’s special secretary for jails, to probe into the claims that 41 allegedly fake prisoners are housed in Karachi jails. During the first day of the inquiry, the officials of the prisons department handed over a list of 41 prisoners, giving details of the cases against them. Out of 41, only two prisoners are convicted and the rest are under trial in central and Malir jails. Jails minister Manzoor Wassan said these prisoners have been facing multiples charges. “We have summoned the relevant police officials under whose jurisdiction the cases have lodged. The inquiry may take a few days but we will furnish the report for the federal government.” The issue of 41 fake prisoners was raised at a law and order meeting chaired by the prime minister at Governor House on Tuesday.
