Much of this quality, the good bits anyway, came from the work of Tehelka, a journal and website, which has done outstanding and brave work. Its editor Tarun Tejpal attacked one of his young female employees in a Goa hotel elevator. She filed a complaint and now Tejpal has been charged with rape by the Goa government. Here are a few observations on this story.
First, Tehelka has been damaged by this. It is fine to say that the magazine and the brilliant journalism it has done is the work of a team rather than an individual. But the fact is that Tehelka is too closely associated with its proprietor-editor to come out of this without a substantial, and in my opinion, a fatal loss of credibility. This is a shame. And it is too small and insignificant a media organ to be able to afford to rebuild its reputation, which its owner has just flushed away.
The second is that the media, or at least one organ, will finally realise how unfair and heavy-handed media in India generally is to other people. The manner in which we journalists climb into a story — all together and with emotions aflame — is frightening. Tehelka says the media shouldn’t rush to judgment, but that is precisely what the media does all the time.
Thirdly, Tehelka’s institutional response has been disappointing. It has been too self-congratulatory, for one. The emails it has sent out make one cringe. The management, meaning Tejpal and his deputies, also seem to have waited for the thing to blow away and that was unwise. They have made it difficult for people to see the actions of Tejpal independently of Tehelka.
A fourth observation is that this scandal may not have come to light without Twitter. Newspapers and television channels would have hesitated to report on something of this nature, meaning an incident where no police complaint was filed. It was Twitter’s interest in it that ensured it was followed up without much hand-wringing in the newsroom. Some editors, I can think of one in particular, have got away with similar behaviour in the past because they were confident, rightly, that it wouldn’t be reported.
Fifth, Tejpal has gone into self-preservation mode. He has been charged with rape under a new law that expands the definition of the crime.
That means years of trouble for him and his fear is justified. But what he is doing is the opposite of honourable and certainly, he can be accused of hypocrisy, given how Manichean a view of the world his magazine has held.
One final thing. Tehelka made its reputation exposing corruption in cricket and then cemented it with a sensational report of corruption in defence deals during the BJP government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This was 12 years ago. The BJP response was vicious and it went after the businesses of Tehelka’s financers, raiding them incessantly in an act of naked harassment.
I was on the executive committee of the Editors Guild of India then and one day, we invited LK Advani, who was home minister, over for a session. One of the first things he was asked was why he and his party were making life difficult for that little website (it was only a website then). Advani was disturbingly frank: “If they go after us, we will go after them.”
Goa is, of course, run by the BJP, which has sent a team to interrogate and perhaps, arrest Tejpal. Their enthusiasm for turning the screws on him can be seen in this light.
But this time, it is entirely his doing and it is justified.

Tarun Tejpal was a Congressman masquerading as a journalist. His sting operations were all financed by the Congress and it derived political mileage from the sting journalism of Tehelka. The financial web of interest tie tehelka directly to the Congress party. Kapil Sibal, a senior minister for example gave five hundred thousand rupees to Tehelka as "donation". Tarun Tejpal's fall from grace is because he raped a young woman in the lift of a five star hotel in Goa. He tried to evade the law by attempting to politicize the matter claiming that the BJP was behind the complaint, but the young woman was bold enough to file affidavit in the court. India has got a global notoriety for some unpleasant incidents and the country will deal with it very strongly.
This is a new trend. Any dissident that you cannot catch, ask someone to blame that they have sexually assaulted you. I find something fishy. . Julian Assange (wikileak) case has given some hint to the govts worldwide. How credible that allegation is?
Tarun Tejpal is in the news for attempting to rape a female employee of his when the International Film Festival was held in Goa recently. Apparently he cornered her in the life of the five star hotel where he and his staff were staying and abused her sexually. When the girl complained to the "Managing Editor" a woman called Shoma Choudhary also from Kolkatta, she made it appear as if the whole affair was consensual and that the woman was making a fuss over nothing. Tejpal magnanimously offered to take leave from the editorial duties and both the man and his woman felt that the ends of justice had been met. In India, there is growing intolerance toward sexual harassment and exploitation and the words of Nancy Poweel mean nothing as she is not aware of the reality of India today. The outrage against Tarun Tejpal and his "Managing Editor" Shoma Choudhary resulted in the Goa police registering a case of rape against Tejpal. The mananagment of Tehelka is putting a lot of pressure on the young girl not to cooperate with the Police in its investigatioon and this is the way the"flag bearer" of the so called secular liberalism behaves in India.
A question on one of the popular Quiz Shows in future:
"Who was the first person to be arrested under the Anti-Rape Laws enacted in 2013?"
Answer: "Tarun Tejpal !!!"
Today Kapil Sibal, the Congress spokesman, told that in 2003, he gave 5 Lakh Rs to Tehelka "as a donation". Is Tehelka an orphanage or new temple , I am unaware of ?
Goa is, of course, run by the BJP, which has sent a team to interrogate and perhaps, arrest Tejpal. Their enthusiasm for turning the screws on him can be seen in this light.
Had it been the Congress in Goa, they would have been turning the screws on the victim
Tehelka got stinged........Law of karma taking its course........
At last! Aakar Patel has blamed an accused as doing something for which only the accused himself is responsible. I am seriously surprised he didn't find Modi responsible for Tarun Tejpal's "Error of judgement"!
Aakar, which defence deal scam exposed by Tehlka during NDA rule you are talking about? Are you talking about Purchase of coffins during Kargil war in which Indian government had incurred a loss of $187,000 ONLY? Google it.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under the Congress rule, has named three Indian Army officials and a US company in the chargesheet. In the chargesheet there is no mention of the then defence minister George Fernandes whose reputation was badly damaged by allegation of a scam in the purchase of the coffins by Tehlka
Bangaroo, the then president of BJP was imprisoned just for accepting Re 100,000 from some one in a sting operation by Tehlka pretending to be a donation to BJP party fund.
Has Tehlka ever uncovered any scam (2G, CWG, COALGATE, HELICOPTER GATE) done by Congress/UPA rule.
Tejpal is nephew of Kapil Sibbal and an agent of CONGRESS.
You are correct his own action did him in for at least 10 years as he has been accused of CUSTODIAL RAPE by police.
Sting operations and human baits for unscrupulous revelations is not "brilliant journalism". Investigative journalism means something else and Tehelka made a mockery of it. Tejpal is a Congress stooge and read his "Mrs. Gandhi and her extra god" to see impartial he was. On a broader point, use of women as commodity by powerful people is nothing new in India. It starts with M. K. Gandhi using underage girls (his own grand nieces and many others) in "experiments" with absolute disregard for their own physical and psychological development.
In India the shameless self certified liberal media (of which this writer Aakar patel is a life member) and Congress party which literally sponsors Tehelka has already started their dirty mission of "Saving private Tejpal".
I would love the bjp if they go all gung ho on him as they usually do. Go bjp.
