Meanwhile, Mr Aziz’s words had been met with some incredulity, notably from within the PTI. Certainly, the senior official did not say where or when the assurance by the US had been given. With the Hangu attack coming so soon after he addressed the Senate panel, it is now quite obvious that the US has no intention of stopping drone attacks and is interested only in guarding its own interests.
We do not quite know what the precise nature of the deal between Pakistan and the US is. Speculation on this issue has floated for far too long. It is time for the government to come clean and tell people the truth. This, after all, is fundamental to establishing a relationship of honesty with people, and also making it clear how things stand in real terms. Fabricating stories or disguising the truth will not, in the longer run, help us and will indeed only make things more complicated as far as the matter of devising a strategy to take on the Taliban goes. We need to face the reality of drones and work within this realm to find a way to cope with the menace of terrorism that has already taken such a high toll on our country and its people.

Dawn in its editorial has rightly pointed out that the Americans promised about Taleban. Not Haqqani.
ET Moderator - I wonder why you disallowed my earlier comment. I had only stated that lying has been glorified by an ex-Ambassador of Pakistan in an Op Ed in another paper. And that Husain Haqqani's book "Magnificent Delusions" reveals that this has been going on since the years in Pakistan and has been passed down the generations by Pakistani leaders.
Agree with the thrust of the Editorial - but my recollection is that Aziz indicated that the American's were willing to temporarily halt drone attacks if the Taliban actually sat down for negotiations - that hasn't happened. In short - Aziz has levered the drone attacks to induce the Taliban to sit down and negotiate - probably a smart move if anyone believes him.
@alamgir: BTW, "extremists" (terrorists!) existed before the drones were created to reach those "safe havens" allowed by weak (complicit?) governments! BTW, the slaughter of tens of thousands of Pakistanis by "extremists" (TTP!) has led to just WHAT???
The picture is useful : this is how a guy lying through his teeth looks like!!
drones(lead to)more extremists (lead to) more drones(lead to)further increase in extremists...who pay the price..Poor Pakistanis(simple)
Well written. In 70s there was the Red Army Faction, also called Baader Meinhof group in Germany, which terrorized German society. They were young people trying to dismantle democratic set up in Germany. They killed, kidnapped many. But never did the government start talks with them. Those who kill, for whatever purpose, must be caught and eliminated. In the end Germany arrested many and the movement died within a few years. That is what pakistan must do. Those who kill innocent people must be dealt with severely like criminals. They are not our brothers, as some leaders would have us believe. There should be no let up until they give up these evil acts.
Everyone lies and works to protect its vested interests: The US, Pakistani government, military, the Taliban, media including urdu press and television, foreign media, 'impartial' observers and bodies, political parties, civilian bureaucrats, everyone. We lie to ourselves to suit our own narrative or comfort ourselves because it is not enough to be discerning or well read, everyone lies. How can sift the truth from lies or exaggerations and distortions, understand the nuances of realpolitik, geo startegic realities and behind the scenes picture.
