Shortly before a storm broke over the stadium, South African captain Faf du Plessis called up JP Duminy to bowl his off-spinners, and Duminy caught Nasir Jamshed off his own bowling with his third delivery.
Only ten more deliveries were possible before play was halted. Pakistan were 60 for two after 9.1 overs, four runs short of a revised par score after South Africa made 153 for seven in their 20 overs. Jamshed's wicket meant that the target was pushed just out of Pakistan's reach.
Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla gave South Africa a flying start, putting on 72 for the first wicket before Amla was bowled by Pakistan captain and off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez for 31 off 20 balls.
De Kock made 43 off 33 deliveries before he was well caught at long-on by Sohail Tanvir off Hafeez.
A third wicket fell to slow bowling in the space of 15 runs when Shahid Afridi bowled Henry Davids for three.
The success of the slower men made it puzzling that Pakistan made a late switch in their team, leaving out their world-class off-spinner Saeed Ajmal at the last minute, causing a delay in the toss.
With play starting 25 minutes late following a thunderstorm, Hafeez said it was the first time he had seen the pitch. Ajmal was in the team list handed to the media before the toss but it transpired the change was made as a result of seeing a pitch expected to favour fast bowlers. Junaid Khan, not originally named, took the field instead of Ajmal after Hafeez sent South Africa in.
Hafeez and Afridi took three wickets between them for 39 in their combined eight overs as the South African innings lost momentum.
South Africa's defence of their total started badly when Lonwabo Tsotsobe's first deliveries were called wide, with one going for an extra four runs. But Tsotsobe came back strongly and bowled Ahmed Shehzad for nine in an unbroken four-over spell of one for 19.
Shehzad and Hafeez put on 32 and Pakistan looked well placed before they were thwarted by Duminy and the rain.
Earlier, rain had already caused a delayed start to the match.
After Hafeez won the toss and put the hosts in to bat first on a wet outfield, Pakistani seamers failed to place any sort of restriction on South African strokeplay.
As Anwar Ali and Sohail Tanvir opened the attack, the Proteas marched to 41 without a loss in four overs.
Saeed Ajmal excluded from the playing eleven, Hafeez brought himself on and pulled things back with two wickets.
Debutant Bilawal Bhatti impressed with his nippy bowling. He took a wicket but ended up with expensive figures at 35 for 1.
Hafeez took two for 25 while Junaid Khan took as many wickets for 24 runs.
Shahid Afridi also managed to take one wicket.
Shoaib Malik and Abdul Razzaq are out of the match due to injury. In their stead, Pakistan are playing seamer Anwar Ali and debutant all-rounder Bilawal Bhatti.

@waseem sarwar: A loss is a loss,,,, no justification can change the result. What happened in the recent series played in UAE, no rain or sand storms yet lost the series in a humiliating manner. It is not bad luck as mentioned in your comments but the team as a whole is in disarray with the worst battling line up displaying poorest batting skills.
Hafeez was right. Every team plays with their own style and Pakistan's traditional style is to hold wickets in first half and then hit out in last few. Last night when rain stopped play, Pakistan were in very good position. Styen had already bowled his 2 overs and Pakistan had survived the early onslaught. It is a poor logic that South Africa scored more runs in their first 9 overs so Pakistan should have equaled it. It was bad luck but we played very competitive cricket last night.
Atleast the Pakistani team has shown some fight. It is really very difficult for a team to fight back just two days after they lost such a one-sided series. However, we must support our team and back it up, We have an example of West Indies who are off color for many years, the England and New Zealand teams who has just won one global tournament each but their supporters keep on supporting them.
@Jawed Saleem: Its down, down, down and down and that too at a fast phase. How long can one say DOWN, BUT NOT OUT. In the rankings, no where in top 3 of Test, ODI and T20 Pakistan is appearing. In ODI rankings, 6th place.
@Taha Ali: Whether batting first or second, present Pakistan team as a unit is too bad to win.
Pakistan should have set the target for South Africa, rather than bowling first!!
@Dhaka: Remember Asia Cup Final last year at Dhaka and tell who's crying baby?
And now the Nature against the Greens...... :'(
Its a bcci conspiracy along with match referee.
@Dhaka: you better cheer up over NZ win....
@Jay: Why are you so worried dude!!!
At end of 5 overs South Africa were 53 for no loss - Pakistan were 30 for 1. At end of 9 overs and 1 ball when the match ended South Africa were 77 for 1 and Pakistan were 60 for 2.
The asking rate at start of match was 7.2 runs per over and it had gradually climbed to over 8.7 runs per over by the time the match was stopped at end of 9.1 overs.
Then Mohamed Hafiz says he had no control over situation, this was a pitch where a team could easily score 160-170 runs. Of course why they had managed to score only 60 off 9.1 overs is unclear when pitch was good for 160-170 runs.
@MJ: The team did catch a break from the weather Gods. At end of each over Pakistan score was lower than South Africa and wickets were equal or higher. If they had managed to play full 20 overs they would have lost again and there would be no Rain Gods excuse.
This team cannot get a break even from the weather :-(
It is a conspiracy by the weather Gods against Pakistan. Our slow scoring had nothing to do with the defeat.
Extremely unfortunate :(
Although it looks close, if you look at South Africa innings then at 9 overs 1 ball they were 77 for 1 compared to 59 for 2 for Pakistan (the score at which match ended). If you look at scores at end of 5 overs, Pakistan were 30 for 1 while South Africa were 53 for no loss. So it does not look as though it was such a close match.
Plus if one sees the trend of past few matches, the only ones where they fared well was when they were defending a total. They have never succeeded in chasing a total.
Anyway, better luck for the next match.
Looks like pakistani kids are crying for a win !
Team can't win until you drop Sohail tanveer and bring in Asad Shafiq/Khurram manoor.
Another defeat of pakistan, its seems pakistan born to fail every thing.
Best of luck to Pakistan.
