KARACHI:

The progress of youngsters in the Professional Squash Association (PSA) world rankings is a source of satisfaction for national coach Jamshed Gul, who believes that the upcoming lot has brought a new ray of hope for Pakistan squash.

The likes of Farhan Zaman, Danish Atlas Khan and Tayyab Aslam have been making noticeable strides in the charts as they look to overtake senior players Aamir Atlas Khan, Farhan Mehboob and Yasir Ali Butt.

Zaman has been boosting his reputation as the next big player from the country as he moved to the 64th rank. He aims to break into the top 30 next year.

Danish has also gradually been making a name for himself and now sits at the 73rd position — just two places below elder brother and Asian champion Aamir.

Diminutive Tayyab from Punjab is another player to progress forth as moved on to 112, a big jump from his below-250 ranking just last year.

“The youngsters have been making quick strides in the PSA rankings which has been pleasing for me,” Gul told The Express Tribune.

“Despite playing only a few PSA tournaments abroad, our players have been doing well. The trio of Zaman, Danish and Tayyab have improved their rankings substantially. I see a bright future for Zaman and Danish as they are Pakistan’s next hope…Tayyab has also proved that he can be groomed into a top player.”

Meanwhile, top-ranked Pakistan player Nasir Iqbal has been disappointing of late as he has failed to move on after breaking into top 50 and has fallen back to the 55th spot.

“There is work to be done with Nasir and I’m hopeful that he’ll bounce back soon.”

Gul know better then any else that it is not a big achievement to get in to top 100. But the real Takk is to get into top 50 or 30. It is there the real competition begins.
